Also the DMV is giving a grace period of two months this year.
Last year by this time 90% of the B and X plate trucks had already sent in for renewal.
This year, with the cost of fuel only 20% have sent in for renewal.
There was one other class that was getting the extension, but I can't remember what is was.
B is commercial
X is farm
There might be a lot less trucks on the road shortly.
Heavy trucks do more damage to the road.
You are paying for the extra damage.
Yeah I suppose it makes sense for somebody who tows a heavy load every day to have to pay for the extra damage to the roads... but as someone who tows half a dozen times a year, I'm basically paying avoid a potential fine if they decide to check me. My truck plus the empty trailer is already over 8k pounds.
If it would've been much more per year I would've probably risked it, no more than I tow.
I can definitely understand the deal with the semis... particularly the coal trucks down around Montgomery, WV... those roads are trashed.
I went to the DMV today and re-registered my truck for 15k and got a class B tag. It was as simple as 77 FORD said, just tell the lady class B and how many pounds. I had to have my property tax receipt with me and fill out a card and hand them $60 and boom... that's it. These tags do run from July to July according to the lady.
Funny how giving the DMV an extra $30 a year suddenly makes my truck more capable of towing the additional weight
I did the same thing when I registered my new 2003 Excursion. I just told them we wanted class B and gave them the weight (15K) paid the amount and walked out with the new plate. The only requirement I found was that the truck had to weigh more than 8000#. They did tell me that if you registered a truck under 8000# with class B and got pulled over you would get fined for being under weight.

What??!? That's crazy talk. If that's true, how is a person supposed to register their truck? Both ways? Maybe we should pull the trailer everywhere we go?
Our chapter leader is out of the country right now, and I don't know if he will be checking in while gone.
So it may take a bit for you to be approved for the WV chapter.
As for being under 8000 pounds getting you a ticket, I have never heard that.
I have been around B plate trucks for many years.

According to the person at the DMV in Kanawha City your vehicle has to weigh 8000# in order to get class B license. It was one of the first questions they ask me. Then she told me about the ticket. My Excursion weighs 8900# so class B license was not a problem.
Dave are you related to John & Ruby Sponaugle? There just are not that many Sponaugle's out there.

Reason: added question

That's interesting. They never asked me anything about how much the truck weighed. I just told her I had a 3/4 ton truck and pulled a double-axle trailer and she signed me up.
Are you sure its the weight of the vehicle (curb weight) or is it the GVWR? I coudn't find the same page for 2003, but for 2000 the Excursion's curb weight is 7688lbs max (4x4, PSD). However, they do show a 8900lb GVWR, which caught my eye because you said 8900lbs. My truck weighs about 6300 lbs but my GVWR is 8800 lbs, so I bet that's it....
