....also first time owning a diesel. Bought a 1996 Ford F250 4X4 auto 7.3 PS Crew Cab with 284,000 miles on it. Paid 5 grand for it. Only got it for pulling my 18' Haulmark for waterfowl hunting. Any mods I should? Took it to a friend of mine's dad's trucking company for him to go through it and check'er out for me to see what I got. Any info-help-suggestions are much appreciated! Seems the only things I can find wrong with it are cruise: control not working-back windows won't go up via the driver's power up button...will go down on one side-just minor things for now.
nice truck welcome the window thing is probably switches. as for mods do a search for fpr shim, 203 stat, hpop, 10k, ebpv, hpx, ccv, and eot. you may want to do some of these and they are all cheap mods. good luck
Nice truck and Welcome to FTE!
The very first thing i would do is install three guages: Pyrometer, Boost and tranny temp. Especially when towing, these are crucial. General limits are: Dont let egt's go over 1200 except for short bursts, after about 30-35lbs of boost, you start killing your stock turbo, and at roughly 40 psi boost, you may blow a head gasket.
Tranny temp, stay under 200-205 degrees.
Once you get those installed, i'd go with an exhaust, intake and chip
Yup, the new downpipe is the most important, then 6637 intake from NAPA and gauges. That is where I would start with from ground zero. Then we can really start making power with the truck.
Also look at Steve Baz's website. I think stevebaz.com or similiar. He has alot of useful information on there.
You asked the question and sounds like everyone has the bases covered for you. On the bright side, if you have the money, we are definately the ones to help you spend it.

Welcome to FTE ,
Cruise Control (CC), may be the sensor on the end of the Master Cylinder....called a Brake Pedal Applied (BPA) sensor. They are known to go bad. Remove the connector on the BPA. There should be continuity on the 2 pins in the sensor...it's a normally closed switch with the ignition switch on or off, doesn't matter.
You can use a small piece of wire (paper clip) stuffed into the connector end to test the remainder of the CC system. Go for a ride and see if it works. Post your results here, someone will help you out.
Rear windows will take a bit more testing. The power to the rear windows go through the drivers door switch, I would start there......
gauges and 6637 filter mod, are the first two IMO after that downpipe and cat delete/or compleet exaust depending on budget. after that it realy goes into what your budget is and how much power you want to make.
question is slightly off target... but what is the highest recommended on oil temp??? i have hit 220 degrees on my truck while towing... 200 while driving empty...
Thanks for the replies fellas! Just got word about my truck from the shop. Was low on tranny fluid but couldn't find any leaks. And front end is making a niose. Other than that...they said I got a helluva truck. Was good news....I was worried about the tranny with that many miles on it. Looks like a few minor repairs and she'll be ready to hook up to my rig and chase waterfowl this winter.
Scott here, and welcome to the site where ppl love to help you spend your money on modding you truck.
If you want to learn a ton of stuff, and get the PMS bug, start at the first posts of this forum, work your way forward, and bookmark the important ones that you run across. I did, and spent 2 hrs a saturday morning reading everything I could, and it took awhile. It will give you a great perspective in what can and will go wrong, recalls, trouble spots, and will point you in a couple of directions when you run into problems. That way you dont have to spend a ton of $ going to the shop to figure out the simple problems.
Problem is now for me now, is not enough cash and too many wants, and everyone here wants to help me spend $ upgrading, which unfortunately will happen with time
