I have been tring to find a sending unit for a 1985 f350 with a 460 it has the newer style tank with the larger hole but doen't have a pump in the tank because it was carberated. I seem to either get the small older style sender or one with a pump on it. Any ideas?
More than likely the original was modified if the 460 was not factory, according to all the info I have, it used the low pressure in tank pump on the 460, including my father's F350. The injected motors added a frame mounted fuel pump to boost the levels up to EFI pressures from the low pressure in-tank units. So your fuel pump is on the motor? The OE sender for the front tank on a 460 equipped truck looks like this...
ya this has a pump on the timing cover but the catalyst sticker says 460 so thought that it was factory. the sender doesn't look to have been welded on and it has a sock on the bottom. I don't know if it factory or not
First off an 85 F350 with a factory 460 came with an in-tank fuel pump & sending unit as shown above. Second if it is factory there should not be a catalytic converter over 8600#.
My guess is the 460 is not the stock 460. It must of come out of an older truck or at least the timing cover is older. If my memory is correct 1984 F350s & up had electric pumps in tank, even on the carbed 460s. I know for sure the Class C motorhomes had them in 1984 because I was a mechanic for a Ford dealer in those years.
ok so if thats what it suppose to have then how much fuel pressure did they run maybe I 'll put that type of sender in it and eliminate the pump on the timing cover.
hum i just parted out a 85 f350 with factory 460 4 speed has the same thing he has just like the older trucks with no pump just a bigger hole for the sender

Not necessarily so.....
My '87 460 has nothing but a hose to the bottom of the tanks, and I know it's stock since I bought it off the lot 21 years ago.
Kermmy,
I believe you have what's known as 'hot fuel handling' , a recirculating system meant to prevent vapor lock in hotter climates.
Jermy,
IMO, you're far better off leaving it as is. I've got almost 320k on mine and it still works fine. It's a real PITA to have to pull down your tank to change a pump when it fails.

Sorry, Ford Motor Company doesn't agree with you.
The parts catalog shows four 460 sending units for 1985/86, and two for 460's in 1987.
These are just the senders, no pump.
Examples:
E7TZ-9275-C = 1987 F250/350 351 or 460 w/155" or 168.4" wheelbase-use with 19.5 gallon aft axle steel tank.
E5TZ-9275-JA = 1985/86 F250/350 with 351 or 460 w/ 133" / 155" / 168.4" wheelbase-use with dual line mid-ship tank.
The 1985/86's use the SMALL sender gasket, which is the same gasket that fits cars from 1960 thru mid 1980's, and 1967/79 F100/350's except with the incab tank: COAF-9276-A.
The 1987's use the LARGER sender gasket: E1VZ-9276-B.

Since most Ford dealers still have this catalog, it's fairly EZ to go to a dealer, give him those refs...and...take a look-see.
