351 W heads

Being an Australian, I know the basic operation of the 351 Cleveland engine, however the 351 Winsor, while similar has me wondering.
How does the cooling system on a 351 W work? I have a few spare sets of Cleveland heads and to fit them to a Winsor block, I have been told I must block up two water passages on the face of the head which rests on the engine block, and I must drill a hole on the OUTSIDE so water can flow through. Does the top radiator hose on a wisor somehow connect to the intake manifold? Does the manifold somehow cover the holes on the heads?

Thanks

335clevo,
Greetings! The Windsor heads use a coolant passage in the intake face of the cylinder heads that mates up with coolant passages in the windsor intake manifold. The Windsor manifold has a "runner" that is cast in, running from one head to the other, on the front of the manifold, with a thermo housing cast in towards the passenger side. The coolant passages in the Windosr heads are in the same location as the Cleveland heads, only on the intake face (right above) instead of the deck face like the Clevelands. Plugging and drilling these passages allows you to use a Windsor-style intake on Cleveland heads with adaptor plates (1/2" thick on a Windsor block) OR you can plug the Cleveland passage (deck face) and drill the FRONT of the head at this junction and install 5/8" nipples to run hoses to a remote thermo housing. Check out www.pricemotorsport.com for some pictures on intake adaptors, Windosr manifolds, and the remote thermostat housing. Should give you a good visual representation which may help. - Don

Thanks Don,

I had a look at your web page and it shows off the radiator hose coupling really well. I think it might be simpler to just plug the Cleveland passages and bore out new ones on the side to use a Winsor manifold, rather than go to the trouble and complication of 5/8" nipples and hoses and all the rest . . . . I like nice big simple engines with a minimum of hoses and wires. Needless to say I prefer a carby over fuel injection and Diesel over petrol.
