Exclamation Multiple symptoms...HELP!!!

Alright, here's what's going on. For the past week or so my battery light has been staying on and the voltage guage on the dash is reading lower than normal but only by about 2 or 3 volts. I checked both batteries with a voltmeter the first day it happened and they were both about 13V.

Yesterday I put a new serpentine belt on it (the other was getting too flexy) and changed the oil from 15W40 to Rotella Sythetic 5W40.

This morning, the battery light is still on (I though maybe the other belt was too loose and the new one would fix this) and the EGT guage was jumping all around and after a 10 minute drive over flat land keeping the RPM's around 2k was pegged over 1500 and I know the engine wasn't that hot.

Could one bad battery cause this? Could the alternator be going bad slowly? In my experience with alternators, they quit pretty quick so I'm not sure about this one?

Any suggestions and possible fixes and any things to look for or check would be greatly appreciated.

Oh yeah, I forgot to add that it sounds like the starter is turning the engine over slower and the last week when I've tried to use my autostart it will start the truck, run for about 2 seconds and then shut off. It does this 3 times and then sends a start error code to my remote.

first i would have the batteries and alternator load tested. a simple voltage test will not tell you if the batteries are good or not. some places such as autozone or advance auto will check them for free. let us know what you find out.

Did you have 13 volts with the engine running? Should be above 14 volts if the alt and connections are good. You will have to put a draw on the batteries and check voltage to see if the batteries are bad. Get them checked at Schucks.

Edit: Typed to slow.

When you say you have "autostart" do you mean a remote starter? My son-in-law had an aftermarket remote starter on his 99 PSD and it started draining the batteries.. He removed it and problem when away.. But, yes check your battery voltage with a digtal volt meter while idling.. should have about 14.4 volts if your alternator is working properly.. and have both your batteries load tested .

Also check the small 2 wires that come off the top of the alternator.. mine were rubbing the alternator housing and shorted out.. this will causes your battery light to come on.. These wires are abit too short from the factory and lay sometimes on the edge of housing..

Thank you all for the quick replies. I'm gonna stop by Schucks on the way home this afternoon and have them run the load test.

clintbonnie-the autostart I refered to is a remote start. If the load check comes out okay I think the next step I may take is to have the place that put in the autostart check everything out.
