351W Carb

What original carb should be used on a stock 351W. I got a 84 F-150 w/ 351W in it. The guy I bought it from changed it from a 302. I'm getting horrible gas milage (about 6 1/2 mpg) and I'm not sure if the correct carb is on it.

If it's a monster holley with a big chrome dual feed line going to it, you probably have a legitmate concern. Originally it would have had a motorcraft 2bbl or a 4bbl holley. You can sort of tell if it's the original style holley, because it will have many hook-ups for vacuum lines and smog stuff. If you have doubts what you have, and have the money, a dual plane intake and a small 600cfm edelbrock or holley should be all you need.

351W Carb

Wow, if I hear about another guy with an 84-85 351W that gets lousy gas mileage I might just go crazy!!! My '84 F150 4X4 351W came with a factory holley 4-barrel model 4180C. Same carbs they put on the 302 for Mustangs and Capri(?) that year. I just rebuilt it and am hoping that this will fix my 6-7 mpg problem. I know its a big carb/motor/truck, but if I could just get around 10, my wife might get off my back about gas money. Of course, like the above post, you can change to something else, but the 4180C would have came with your truck if it had a 303/351W and a 4-barrel.
Hope this helps,
tom
