4 speed leaking

I have a Tremec RUG 4 speed in an '85 f150. Twice now, I have removed the extension housing from the transmission, and put a good bead of RTV gasket maker on the trans/housing. The transmission also has a new gasket between the trans housing and extension housing. IT STILL DRIPS!! :-( Is there something else I should be doing? Maybe RTV (high temp) gasket maker is the wrong substance?

I'd be inclined to get some gasket paper from an auto parts store and make a
paper gasket, seal it with, um, I guess RTV would work, or maybe that Form-a-
Gasket stuff.

Oil leaks are hard to find sometimes, so don't get frustrated. I would clean it up very well in that area, put the rear wheels on blocks, and run it for a little bit, stop it, and then check for the leak.

Believe it or not, the leak could be forward of that area, and you cannot tell because the air from driving down the road, blows it back till it hits a piece on the tranny and drips from there. I have seen what looks like a rearend leak, only to find the leak originated on the engine, and then blew back till it hit the rearend housing and dripped from there.

On my car (Pontiac) I was sure I had a rear main seal leaking. So when I started to look around closer it was the back of the lifter cover (valley pan) leaking. It was running down over the bell housing and made it look like the rear main. Saved me a lot of work! So yes, pay close attention where it's coming from.

Well, turns out not the transmission at all. Thanks, I owe you guys a beer! :-) My rear main leaks some, so that must be the source. The oil looked to thin to be gear lube anyway. I wish I would have thought of running the truck jacked up, or asked before, taking the transfer case/transmission apart twice. At least didn't do it a third time for no reason.

Well, at least you should be good at it now!

My rear main is leaking too,and I'm not looking forward to changing it either.
