What is the factory connecting rod length for a 351w?Where is the best place to buy forged pistons with close to 10.5 compression? What do I need to keep in my mind to run 250hp nitrous on this motor?
Well I can't recall stock conrod length I can say this. A few good ideas for nitro applications is to use studs instead of bolts for the heads and the main bearings, 7/16 screw in studs for the rocker arms, better exhaust system, stainless steel valves, new valve springs, and (your choice) roller cam/rockers. Anything that will keep the engine from flexing under the extra stress of nitro is a good idea. A couple of choices for the pistons is the PAW or summit racing. Both have good tech support and sellection of parts. Another question is are you going to be using a "wet" or "dry" system?
The connecting rod length for 351 Windsors is 5.956 inches. Any flat-top piston with 60cc heads should result in 10.5-to-1 compression. I would recommend buying the best pistons your budget allows. However, if you are planning on a 250-shot of NOS, you are strongly urged to purchase a set of racing pistons designed for heavy doses of "squeeze". I personally use Venolia units, with ZERO failures. Keep in mind there are other options besides Venolia, such as Arias, Ross, etc. Also, don't just order a set, tell the salesperson you are running heavy NOS, as you will need a set of pistons with lowered ring lands. They will know what to do from there.
Plan on O-ringing the block and good head studs, not bolts. I use the ARP's with ZERO failures. And don't use this much NOS on stock valves, either, you're just begging for a melted valve. Without writing you a book, that is the basics.
One more thing: this is a word of caution/warning, do not use this much NOS on a set of hypereuctectic pistons. Interesting things happen when you mix NOS and "hyper-uties". The pistons don't really "melt" like cast, they tend to simply disintegrate. Something to do with chamber harmonics/frequencies blowing them apart. Interesting, eh? Have fun. - Don, New York
