Engine swaps - replacing 302 in '91
This must have been discussed here before, so if anyone has pointers to an article please post it.
I have a 1991 F-250 4x4 with 5 speed (Mazda I believe). The engine has a bad rod knock, and the slave cylinder in the trans just went. So instead of fixing the transmission to get it mobile again I am thinking I'll just try to find a bigger engine and auto transmission to swap in.
Can a transmission from a 2 wheel drive car be used? I know that for a Chevy it is just a matter of changing output shafts. It is much easier to find 2 wheel drive parts trucks than 4x4s.
Do the manual and auto equipped trucks for the '87-96 years share the same crossmember? Or will I need the crossmember to?
If I stick with the manual and find a 351w, are there any other parts needed for the swap? Assuming I get the right flywheel, and all the accessories and brackets for the 351w?
Thanks.
