Okay, after much research, and many thread responses, it is confirmed that the little ford black box under my driverside seat was, in fact, a citizens band readio device.
Now the hard part.... finding the factory replacement.. Any clues? I think I have exhausted all my resources..
BTW: This is in my 79 250 four by, 4 on floor 351m ranger edition..
I have since purchased a different CB radio for it, but am reluctant to install it for hopes of finding something original.
Parts for the factory CB are on ebay all the time. Antennas are nearly impossible to find.
You mean the factory CB antenna that my wife broke off my truck is hard to find? She said it was broken off when the railroad crossing arm came down as she was backing away from the tracks. That means the crossing arm came down between the winshield and the antenna as she was backing up. Not a scratch anywhere else on the truck. I decided for my peace of mind not to ask her anymore questions about that incident.

I didn't know there was a difference in the antenna
many years ago the antenna on my towncar got broke and replaced it with an aftermarket power antenna and saw no difference in cb performance
I do know when CBs were popular you could buy a box that made CB work from FM antenna
