Hey I was wondering if anyone could help me out. My 02 lightning is sputtering when i am idle and vibrating alittle bit more than ussual. I just recently had a spark plug replaced because it shot out, and this problem began after the spark plug was replaced. When im in drive and i am stopped the RPM needle starts to move up and down alittle bit between .5 and 1. Does anyone know what could be causing this, and if it could be causing damage to the engine. The service engine light also came on when the spark plug shot out and has not turned off since i got it replaced. I would appreciate any help. thanks.
How was the plug launch fixed? Timesert or head replacement?
Was the old COP also replaced? If so, I'd check to make sure the COP was plugged in after the repair was done. Also make sure the injector was plugged back in.
Who did the fix? A shop or Ford? I'd assume someone else other than Ford since the SES light wasn't cleared.
Have you scanned for the DTC code? If so, what is it?
If you need to scan for the code, you can borrow/rent a code scanner at just about any auto parts store such as Kragens, Autozone, Napa, etc.
You can also do an in-truck self diagnostic using the digital odometer.
After you get in your truck, before you turn the key at all, press and hold the odometer trip reset button.
Once you turn the key to the ON position, and the lights on the odometer read-out change, let go of the button. Press the reset button to scroll through the menu. If you press and hold it too long, it will clear out and go back to the mileage.
Look for the menu that says DTC. If you have a code, it will say DTC2145 or something...OR DTC NONE for no codes.
It should be noted however, the self-diagnostic isn't foolproof. My handheld scanner has shown codes present when the self-diagnostic has shown no DTC's present.
Also, check for any vacuum lines that have become disconnected.
...worst case, possible head damage, upgrade with a set of patriot heads.good luck
Garbage heads.
Worst possible choice you can make in an aftermarket head for Lightnings, based on all the posts and threads on the other Lightning forums.
Patriot heads are only good if you use the bare heads and build them yourself, or trust your engine builder to assemble the heads with the proper springs, valve guides, valves, etc.
