havent seen two much on auto's just manual, what can i put in for an all round tranny for an 83 300 to replace the stock 3 sp i want two have an extra gear for highway is my biggest concern but it will have to pull up to 2000 pounds from time to time sometimes (rarly more) and i want more millage in town realy what is a good all round tranny for the truck this is not somethin to ceap out on, the truck has a 3;81 gear in it i think pretty sure if not close to it
You are going stick to auto, so you need a flexplate and you need to remove the pilot bushing.
The later models certainly run unmod'd, as do many early ones.
After you figure out the right flexplate, and get it bolted up, make sure the starter fits etc, then deal with the driveshaft, and the shifter, you need to deal with the TV cable or linkage.
TV is Throttle Valve cable or linkage, and it helps regulate pressure inside the trans to maintain proper up and down shifting. Improper adj. or missing, you will cook the trans quickly.
You may be able to find one at the scrappy right off a 300, in which case you should have all you need for a swap.
