plenum gasket advice

Hey everyone,

I think I have exhasuted everything expect my plenum gasket as a possibility for a low vacuum level. Besides, I need to replace my valve cover gaskets anyway. So, I am thinking of replacing my valve cover gaskets, my intake plenum gasket and my throttle body gasket. I wanted to see if anyone out there has any advice on this. I will also try to clean out my throttle body while I am there.

Any advice? Anything else I should check on while I am down there? Anything tricky waiting for me, or is this a straightforward swap out?

Thanks

Not too sure as I have never done it on these Fords. I just found out recently that you have to remove the intake to change a valve cover gasket. Good luck. At least this will bump you up to the top where someone with more experience will see it.

ok, so an update. I changed the valve cover gaskets and the upper intake gasket (and throttle body). But, the intake gasket that Advance Auto parts had for the 5.8 (supposedly my engine) wasn't the right one. The one from the 302 fit instead.

Anyone else have an 88 5.8L and has changed the plenum gasket? My intake has squarish passages, but the 5.8L gasket from Advance had oval ports. Does anyone know what's going on with my setup? Was there something wierd in 88? Can you switch out the intake from a 302 onto a 351W? Is there a way to tell what engine I have in my truck, aside from the VIN? That is, if someone changed the engine, is there an easy way to tell? Along similar lines, the EGR gasket that Advance has for the 5.8 doesn't fit my ride either. IT didn't look like the 302 was any better, but I didn't really get a good look at it.

I am letting my computer relearn the setup before I decide whether or not my vacuum is good. It was at like 18 at idle after she warmed up, and the RPMs weren't too high.

So, does anyone know anything about the intake for an 88 5.8W?

Check the width of the lower intake. I think the width of the lower intake for a 302 is 6.5'' and the width of the 351w is 9''. I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong.

I dont know the exact but my 95 351 has the oval ish ports. The 351 is alot wider then the 302. You should be able to tell if its a 5.0 or 5.8 just by lookin at the lower intake.

i think from reading around that the 302 and 351 intakes aren't intechangeable. So, does anyone know what else isn't interchangeable? Up until yesterday, I was buying parts for a 351 (IAC, EGR solenoid, o2 sensors, etc.) Would a 351 computer work with a 302, or did whoever change my engine out know that he needed to change the ocmputer too?
