there's an aero that's been on cl for ever that has a blown headgasket, but it's a 5 speed.
note: it's an 87. my van is a 93. it should be able to bolt up right?
i know about the electronics being MEH about it... but as i'm not doing the swap right now, i wont go into details (plus i think i have some stuff already book marked)
also, if i picked up that aero, it may become a parts van... or i may remove the whole tranny setup, pull the motor for a spare, keep the head light setup, and send the van onto u-pull it. or just part it out... idk
but yeah i'm thinking about swapping more and more because my car is feeling more and more sluggish untill i'm standing on the gas pedal. and i was driving next to a late 80's to early 90's extended aero yesterday, which had a 5spd in it, and it accelerated quicker than mine, and sounded cooler.
I wanted a 5 spd aero too, but ended up with a nice automatic with lockup converter instead (which helps with highway mileage). Still like to have a 5 spd, but figure I'll stick with the auto for a good while (until it gives me any trouble, that is). From what research I did, I think older aeros used a lighter duty mazda tranny and I think the 4 cylinder aero's from the mid 80's used a smaller mitsubishi tranny (?). You'd be better off with the later heavier duty M5R1 Mazda transmission that was specifically designed to bolt up to the 3.0 Vulcan, and I'm pretty sure the '87 didn't have them yet.
3.0 has unique bolt pattern. Mazda M5OD has bellhousing integrated with tranny case. So you need Ranger M5OD tranny for 3.0 ONLY!
I got tranny from russian truck and used bellhousing from A4LD adding external slave cyl.
You may use any tranny for 3.0 from 1986 to 2006 Rangers. There are 2.9 and 4.0 Aeros and rangers. So be carefull.
It is not all.... You need flywheel, clutch, clutch pedal from truck with 5 st tranny.
First of all collect all parts you need to swap.
BTW. Autos are usually longer manuals. May be DS swap may be required.

All 3.0 aeros with manuals had M5OD R1 trannies still used in Rangers, B series and E-series mazdas. 4-cyl aeros had trannies like Ford Scorpio 2.0. There are ford ovals everywhere inside tranny, so I'm not sure. May be this tranny was designed in Essex, May be in Kohln but may be in Japan..... But parts awailable on our market are made by Ford in Germany now.
This is photo of 4-cyl Lima engine in aero. Clone of early 4-cyl cologne engine.
There is a way to "enforce" this tranny - to swap all parts inside with 4.0 tranny (Ranger, Aero, Explorer and other).
This tranny is easy to add T-case. Manual T-cases are awailable too, but rare, generally made for Japaneese market for Mazda E2200 AWD.
i hope not, cuz then i'd have to swap over to map. or change out a bunch of electronic codes. i'd rather rig up some resistors like you did. j/w, did the codes effect the over all performance of your car?
if it's a simple plug and play, or near simple, yes, i'll probly switch over.
