question on fuel's and additives

I kinda feel like I find myself starting a bunch of threads here lately but I wanna make sure im doing things right with my new old 7.3 idi.

just brought this old girl home friday night 91 f-350 7.3 idi crew cab 2 wheel drive automatic. was getting my ladder racks and such switched over from the 94 f-150 5.0 gasser when a neighbor stopped by to check it out. we were disscussing diesel prices versus gas and he suggested he heard a fella at his work having a diesel and that guy fills a tank in his backyard a 275 gallon with home heating fuel and pumps it into truck saves money like this. my question is....
is this legal? , is the grade of fuel proper for engines, does it matter????
also are there additives I should be aware of for the fuel. thanks guys

Home heating oil has no highway use tax paid on it and it may be dyed red.

Here in WV running non taxed fuel has a 5000 dollar fine plus court costs.
The highway use tax is 53.4 cents per gallon, so it would take a long time to save enough to pay the fine if caught.

I use Diesel Kleen in mine, there are several other addatives that keep the fuel system clean and add lubrication.

Understood Dave like i said im new to this venue and im getting input from all kinds of sources. this fellow tells me you can run damn near anything in a diesel ie. kerosene, diesel, home heating fuel, etc.. is this true ? and where do you get your additives?

My sister lives on a small town and has a 500 gal home heating oil tank, it is a rural area and the oil supplier only has one tank of fuel to draw from so it isn't dyed. they are supposed to put the red dye in it when it is for off road use, as they do for farmers in the area. But I noticed when I changed her filter when I was there that they hadn't dyed it. I guess they figured since it was going into a tank in the house there was no need. But yes it is illegal to use off-road fuel on the highway. If you do put some of the dyed diesel in your engine they can tell even if it was only one time. I think a farmer around here was caught they checked the engine in his pickup and fined him.. I was told it was $20K.. I think that it was higher because it was a company... either that or they found more than one vehicle he had done it in.

Some states (not all) have given a exemption to people using alternative fuels, VO and biodiesel brewers. Some people have kept records of their use around here and sent the state franchise board the road tax, as they are supposed to do, and they checks were mailed back to them asking not to bother them with such trivial amounts... I forget the wording they used, basically it wasn't worth it for them to process small payments.

Tax rules vary from state to state.
Penelties also vary state to state.
On this board that can even be expanded to country to country.

First offense here is 5000 dollars, a repeat raises the fine.

Giving the inspection officers a bad time can also increase the fine and charges.
Failing to pay highway use tax, part of which is state and part of which is federal could result in tax evasion charges if you really **** the officers or the judge off.

Also your vehicle may be towed away for the fuel to be removed from the tanks in an enviromentally safe way and not allowed to be driven untill there is taxed fuel in the tanks.

The guys that do fuel checks here are the WVA Department of Tax and Revenue Criminal Investigation Division.

No sense of humor at all.
