Alright, I recently bought a 1989 F-150 XLT Lariat short wheel base 4WD. It has the 5.0 EFI V8. The engine and transmission both have less than 50,000 miles. The body has around 149,000.
Now to the "good" part.
I got true dual flowmasters put on it about 3 months ago and had to replace my exhaust manifolds because they were cracked in half from the back-pressure from the pipes I believe. Needless to say, I put headers off of a 5.0 1989 Mustang on it and they bolted up pretty good. The reason I did all that to begin with is because the truck has been surging, and jumping and revving and everything it shouldn't be doing.
We replaced the o2 sensor today (I think there's only 1?) and attempted to reset the computer (not too sure if we did it right) and it still does the same thing it's been doing. I know it isn't the spark plugs, plug wires, exhaust, exhaust manifolds, or transmission causing the problem. So my question is, what could be causing my truck to surge, and jump when not accelerating?
Any help at all would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.
The idle bypass valve is notorious for getting clogged with gunk, clean it out if you haven't already. Also.. the first think you should do is pull the codes.. even if the check engine light has not been on. If that produces an all clear then you'll have to look at the more basic things, like vacuum and fuel pressure.
