stumblin engine

Hey all, I have a 00 f250 psd with approx 138k. About 6 months ago the fuel pump went out on the truck and I had it replaced. A month later the truck started to stall at idle. One night it stalled and I couldn't get it started. The shop replced the heating sensor located under the fuel filter and said it was full of dirt? They cleaned that and also removed the fuel tank and cleaned it as well. Since then I have had sporadic problems with the truck. It stalls at idle and it will also cut off while driving at highway speeds?? If it doesn't cut off right away, then it sputters and barely runs like it is not getting any fuel. Most times it starts right back up but occasionally it takes a few attempts. The problem is now a routine problem. It craps out a few times a day. I have tried different gas stations, cleaners and changed the fuel filter every 1000 miles. I don't know what else to look for. It has been back to the same shop 2x and the ford dealer once. The dealer said it was the crank position sensor and the exhaust gas sensor, neither has worked. Has anyone has had a similar problem? I am thinking of pulling the fuel tank to see if there is any thing in it, if not that my next guess would be a electrical problem.

I have a similar problem that just started a few days ago. Not as bad as yours though. I went outside to move my '02 F250 5.4 truck with 37k the other day and it cranked fine, but wouldn't fire up. I tried again. It cranked good but still wouldn't start. On the third try I floored the gas pedal and cranked the engine. It finally roared to life.

Funny thing is that it ran fine before that incident and it ran good until today. I was slowing down at a stop light and as I came to a complete stop the truck died on me. Just then the light turned green and I was about to put the flashers on, but instead I put it in park and started it up again. It ran fine the rest of the day. I did fill up with a fresh tank of gas from a different gas station today, so we'll see if it happens again. I might test the fuel pressure and change the fuel fiter if the problem persists.

The only other time my truck died on me was a few years ago when I checked the air filter while I was filling up with gas. I put everything back together and drove off. I only got a few feet then it died and wouldn't start up. I took the air filter out again and noticed a tiny piece of a dried leaf about the size of a BB stuck to some kind of sensor inside the air filter housing. I removed the debris and it fired right up. It's pretty scary that something so small would keep a vehicle from starting.

Thanks, I think I'll have to start taking the top of the engine apart to if it is something blocking the air flow

Click on "Search This Forum" above and type "dies". It seems that our problem is not that unusual. Some people said it could be a crankshaft positioning sensor or idle air control.

Remove the IAC valve and see if it is full of carbon buildup. If it is clean it or replace it. It is common and happens quite often on the gassers.
