I had the heads redone on my truck last year, but only have drove the truck less than 100 miles since then. I started doing a frame off restore and pulled the motor today and this is what I found
Drivers side head is leaking exhaust thru a bolt hole. How do I fix this? The bolt hole looks like it had a Heilcoil in it a sometime but nothings there now. I remember asked the head shop about that when they did the heads and the told me nothing goes up by there and not to worry about it.
Just got back home and this is still bothering me so I went out and looked at the other head, sure enough same location Just as if you flip the head to the other side) is doing the same. Than hole points right at the alt. and the back of it is solid black form the exhaust blowing on it.
I had the same problem 2 years ago. Found out about it from this forum. I can't recall the thread, though. I even heard about drilling a hole in the firewall to plug the leak on the driver's side head. Mine was behind the alternator and I filled it with JB Weld. 2 years on, and the fix is going strong. Come to think of it, I think Bubba's site has some info on it. I realize I took the cheap way out, but it worked well. Good luck.
Aint that the exauhst crossover made to If im not wrong to 75 up heads? if so, fresh air is driven from those holes to the exaust port through a port belly that restricts alot the exauhst ports, If its the case fill them with epoxy or any sealant, and if possible, grind away the port bellies....
Those holes are for the Thermactor air pump emissions control system. Instead of running external air lines to the exhaust ports, Ford cast them into the head. If you look into the roof of the exhaust port you will see a bump with a hole in it. For best performance, grind down the bumps as they inhibit smooth exhaust gas flow and plug those exterior holes.
