I just bought a 82 f250 with a 351w. I think the only thing wrong is that the idiot pulled the distributor out. How do I find no.1 tdc and get the distributor back where it needs to be so I can get my new jewel home.
If the timing chain hasn't been tampered with, rotate the engine until it reads 10 degrees BTDC, point the rotor to the number 1 plug wire, and drop the distributor in place.

I pull the #1 spark plug out. Hook up a remote starter switch, and crank the engine over with my finger over the spark plug hole. When I begin to feel air blowing out, I stop rotating the engine. I then check the timing marks, and rotate by hand to about 10 BTDC like stated in a previous post. Then drop the distributor in to line the rotor up to the #1 plug wire. Sometimes it takes a couple of tries, and sometimes you have to rotate the engine a little to get the dizzy to drop all the way onto the oil pump driveshaft.
It won't be 180 off...if the piston is at the top (or 10 degrees before top) and you point to the #1 plug, that's your compression stroke with a 10 degree advance.
Also take your time removing the distibutor. I had the oil pump shaft stick in the dist and pulled out of the pump and fall into the pan. And remember you can align the pump shaft to the distibutor with a 5/16s socket, extention, and rachet if the distibutor wont go all the way down.

sauerf100s said it right on how to do it. You have to remember that the crank shaft goes around twice one will be the compression stroke and one will be the exhaust stroke. this is by the way a four stroke engine not a two stroke. so if you just line up the timing marks like you suggested you have a 50/50 chance of being right.
