Yesterday on my way home i stoped at one of the stop lights. My truck acted like it was bogged down and just wanted to go. It has a e40d auto and wondering if the tourqe converter went bad? It has never done this before and i tried it this morning same thing. Does not make a difference if it's in od or not same thing. Acts fine if I manually put it in first gear but other than that when i put it in drive the motor boggs down. Any Ideas?
Get it scanned for codes. Sounds to me like it is going into fail safe. What that means is it puts itself I believe into second gear so you can make it to a repair shop
It will throw a code without turning on the light. The tcc is a clutch in the torque converter that if it was stuck on would stall the engine as soon as you put it into gear. It would not cause that to happen
typical concern resulting from one of three likely items
fluid level is too low or you have an aftermarket filter that is not sealing in the pump pickup bore
second the tcc solenodi is sticking mechanically in the on position and dragging the torque converter clutch at idle
third the torque converter has an internal issue or the pump has an issue
89-91 did not have the ability to flash a malfunction light only 92 and later unless the older model had the processor replaced which would have upgraded it
FMEM failur mode effects management cannot cause this trans to upshift to second gear
the only thing it will do is boost line pressure causing firm/harsh shifts in an attempt to prevent slippage
and the processor will not detect engine stalling due to the torque converter it is a simple type of operating system
to rule out a bad filter seal check your fluid level if its at the full mark add an additional two quarts for testing if the problem is gone pull the pan and replace the filter
if the filter is laying in the pan when you remove it you have found the problem
