Removing Trim ?

What's the best way to remove the chrome trim without damaging it.

I'm taking my 79 F150 4x4 apart to do body work and paint. If possible I want to reinstall the trim.

My 5 year old son thinks this is the greatest thing ever, and have to say this soon to be 40 dad thinks it's pretty cool too. This ties into the previous thread "Why do we have these", and alot were memories of Dad. Me too, and maybe this gets into my son's blood. Maybe he'll inherit mine, but not till I'm in the ground!

I think you have to push up and then carefully pop the top off the clip
and there are some screws at the ends and some of the ends have a clip that you have to unbolt from behind
just take your time and don't let it frustrate you,
it did me and I destroyed some of the clips
but the trim is still good
I'll be leaving mine off

Thanx Salt-Man.

That's why it's best to keep a couple cold ones near by, for those frustrating times, and the good times, and just thinking........

There are 2 or 3 nuts on each upper chrome piece on the front fender, 2 on the door at each end ,2 nuts for the one on the box. The rest are just clips and pull off easy.
The race track chrome is the real pain. There are about 8 for the front fender, 2 on each door and another 8 or so on the box, and they are the hard ones over the rear tire. Nut sizes are 3/8 and 11/32, you will need to remove the front inner plastic fender and remove the signal light to get at the last bolt for the lower chome. Also the best way to get the top front nut on the fender is through the park light . To do this it will take most of a day if you have never done it before so have fun and take your time.

Careful removing the box trim. I bent mine not knowing where the bolt was. If you lay down in front of the rear wheel and reach up you can feel along the inside of the bedside until you reach the nut holding the trim on. I think there's only one on the bed. You need to remove it before you start pulling the trim off. If you have a parts catalog handy you can see where the different types of clips are. After bending one piece of trim, I referred to a LMC catalog (only thing I had with exploded views of the trim) to see where the bolted parts were.

Good luck.

Well, that was easy. I had the quarter panels off yesterday, so I had already found all the hidden bolts, just hadn't fliiped them over to see the trim nuts, duh.
