Question Fuel Pump?

My first F-150 was a '04 SuperCab 5.4 Lariat(new body style) and the fuel pump died unexpectedly after 3 years with 35,000 miles(truck was out of warranty by one month but Ford repaired with only $100 deductible! Thanks Ford!). Truck was stock not modified. Truck was sold last year.

I just bought a Ford Certified 2005 SCrew F-150 Lariat 5.4 ,with only 25,000 miles, two months ago. The truck will be 3 years old in July. The fuel pump died today!! The truck is stock.

I only run name brand gas(BP/Amoco, Shell, etc.)

Any other owners experienced this problem? Both pumps died without warning after 3 years.

I'm hoping this was an early build issue and the new pumps have a better design!

Good thing I have not installed my new toys!(Edge Evolution, K&N Intake, and Stainless MBRP Exhaust 3") They are waiting in my garage.

Do you drive your truck with 1/8th tank of gas or less?

Thanks for the reply. I try to never let my tank drop below a 1/4 of a tank.
I bought the 2004 new but I bought the 2005 as a Ford Certified used truck with 25,000 miles. I do not know how it was driven before I purchased it two months ago. The dealer had to fill the tank since it was a Certified and I'm still on that tank of fuel. I have another vehicle that I drive some. I've only put 250 miles on the '05 since I bought it two months ago.

Seems strange that two vehicles have the same problem at the three year mark(one I owned since new, the other I am the second owner of)

I do not use fuel additives in my trucks. Any suggestions on whether that might help or hurt? Also if you use additives which brands and how often do you use them? A friend recommended Chevron's Techron every oil change.

wow, sorry to hear that both your trucks had the same issue. I have over 92k miles on my 04 and knock on wood, no issues. I also use name brand gas and run my tank almost empty most of the time. At 90k, I ran two bottles of chevron tekron through my truck based on others in this forum. Don't think you need it every oil change, but i would run it through your new used truck once.

Coincidence I think. I have never had a fuel pump go out while owning any of my vehicles, even when I ran out of gas twice in 1 month (stuck fuel gauge). But I have a friend that constantly have fuel pump problems, including one of the trucks I sold to him that was flawless when I owned it, (that same one I ran out of gas with). That same friend drives his vehicles on fumes anyways though.

Fuel pumps do go out for no obvious reasons. But some reasons they do go out are low fuel to cool pump and and clogged fuel filters. Kids like to add to the fuel tanks...rocks, sand, plastic toys, and ect. LOL. Even funnier when the little ones start topping off the tanks of your obnoxious neighbor.

Thanks for the input. Starting to look like bad luck. I take my Mustang to a Road Course 6-10 weekends a year and run it very hard and never had any fuel system issues.

Still really like the F-150!
