Well through the years i've had many great memories with my '99 F-250. As of late I have almost lost it due to the construction field going upside down. Now my engine needs a little tlc and I have been trying to find whats compatible between the 5.4 and the 6.8. I have speculated to myself that the pistons and rods are compatible, but I was wondering 'Is the valvetrain compatible as well?' With that question I ask if you could point me in the right direction. I have to rebuild the heads soon due to leaking seals and may want to do some releasing of Hp/Tq and would like some sort of perfomance valve/spring set-up. I am thinking of doing some bottom end work on it as well. I have read that there is a bearing you can get for the front of the crank because of the nose being the weak part?. I ask beause of my urge to purchase a S/C in the coming year.
I actually want to do a frame-up build on this truck sometime when I get my career job. I would love to make it a srictly rock/trail off-roader ran off propane with 4-links. I also have axle and t-case ?'s but that will be posted elsewhere. Thanks for your time-Vike
What I have always wondered...if it is possible to replace a '99 non-PI engine with a PI engine from a '00 or '01? Get a V10 2v engine with more hp and torque that is in OEM trim.
IMO...is should be possible...as long as a '00 or '01 PCM is installed. I stop short with the '02-'04 because more changes occurred. IE: different dash cluster gauges.
comp cams offers cams and valave springs for the v10 but are rather pricy... 400+ for the springs plus 750 and some change for the cam's.
I know that they will bolt up to the block, but not 100% sure about the intake
as for the pi heads I'am assuming they'll work, many of the earlyer model eninges you can change the heads for more efficent ones without out changing the pcm(you may not be able to make the full HP/TQ which they offer without the same year pcm but what have you got to lose?) theres one or two memebers on the board who have done the swap but havent said anything about how to or whats needed to do it...
I to am in the process or rebuilding my top end ordered up the gaskets, just waitting for ARP to get back to me if they have studs for the V10
been doing some more research about the subject, sence I keep hearing the v10 is the same as the v8 modular but with 2 more cylinders, this is what I found out, if you put pi heads on a npi block, the intake has to be changed with it or you have a high risk of a coolant leak due to intake gaskets not linning up with the npi intake and the pi head, some timming cover botl have to be changed to diffrent sized ones, don't remeber why just remeber reading about it.
there will be some what of a CR increase not sure how much but I'll find out
Hopefully "dirty dog of the desert" will chim in soon
they have some stuff for the 6.8, ive talked to them before about the swap and you need the intake to go with the heads. you can port the npi stuff to get better performance than the pi but then again you can port the pi stuff to get even better.
The only issue between a non-PI and PI motor is the EGR in the '99.
Otherwise, the entire engine will swap right over. It might need a different wiring harness (or massaging the original to fit).
At least, this is what I've gathered over the years about the subject. The matter of putting the PI heads on the non-PI block, I just happen to have checked the other day on one of our sponsor's websites, and the V10 block is the same part number from '99 through '07. However, and this is a big however, that doesn't mean the '99 block is NOT different, just that the later block can be used back to '99. Which means absolutely nothing, most likely
Also, remember the tranny if it's an auto - check part numbers of tranny wiring harnesses from '99 through '01 or '03...
