new build...

Hey all im considering completely re-doing my truck, similar to what bgalaxy has done, but with out the big **** hole in the back. The box will be in the back seat area. Thats not 100% yet though, i may be able to be conviced to chop a big hole in the back of my cab and bed.... We will see when we get there. This is still in the paper stage of things. Really just planning, and figuring.

The truck will need to remain in dd form, but wont actually be a dd. So... on that note. Any suggestions and opinions?

your crazy to cut a big hole in the bed and cab! what bgalaxy has done is quite impressive but if your on any kind of budget, you can throw that out the window im sure haha. sounds like you want a system that is impressive and loud. i think you can make that happen without the big gapeing holes. remember you get what you pay for so if i didnt have a budget i'd be goin' big! a couple 12''s that have a good RMS and a strong mono amp to power them is key.

Doing a cut through is the cheap part. Choosing the products I did does get expensive real quick.

The cut is nothing more then adding airspace for a box that would otherwise be too small.

The only reason the box in mine is soo big was for the pair of 18's they needed 14ft3 of airspace.

a pair of 12's or even 4 12's would require a lot less space then just 1 of my 18's

The 1st question is....

What do you want the system to do?

to be loud.... Im not really sure on what i REALLY want, thats why im still in paper stages. I do know that i want more than i have... or had. I had 2 12"s running from the alpine amp that i had. I want my system to have the capabilites to be very loud, but rarely be pushed at or near its max, it would be more for the occasional show. Ive only ever been to one audio event. So i dont know what really goes on there, or how it all works. But maybe an occasion comp or 2. I like my music, and i like it loud. Opinions on which direction to go? I was pondering just using the back seat area for the box, but im not really sure. There isnt really a whole lot of space there and i wouldnt want the box to be to tall, below the window if not alot shorter, thats why i was considering the cut...

In all reality everybody has a budget of some sort, and i have no intention of going out and buying absolulty everything i need in one big jump. I'll work up to it part by part. Since the truck wont be driven much, its really not a big deal if its down for awhile. Heck with the price of gas, it will probably be a good thing to not drive it for awhile.

Are you willing to ditch the back seat?

Budget is no prob when your willing to take the time to do it right. Mama's truck was in the works 6mo before she bought the truck.

If your looking for loud and maybe hitting a show here and there then we can do cool

2 18's?! damn thats alot of speaker! when i listened to 15'' subs, they werent as "tight" sounding as a 12'' for rock music. hows the 18''s sound for rock music, i would think they would be "loose" sounding?

back seat is already gone, been gone for awhile now too. I have really wanted to do a complete build make it look nice and be nice too. Something i havent ever done before, just a piece here a piece there, something for a friend or too. I want to throw it all together and have it all be mine. I am by no means a rich man, but im not exactly dirt poor either, well atleast most of the time i aint. Time really aint a problem, and if i plan it out right then money shouldnt be either. Not really sure on what i want to do though. 12's 15's 10's heck i dont know right now... Ahh maybe ill go for broke and do 2 mtx jackhammers ( lauging hysterically to self ) Any suggestions as what to do... I am completely open for idea's right now... so folks... suggestions!!!

Well hell, we got plenty of room to work with. Now we just have to decide what to put in it.

You have plenty of space to do 4 12's or 2 15's

4 15's would be sick but it's a min of 60" across for the face. Unless we get tricky with the design.

I would look at the have too's to start. Batteries, wire, alt. That will direct us on what we can do.

How loud do you want to be?

I got a guy that i do tear downs with... he pulls the copper from the building, including the wire. up to 500mcm. I could get a pretty good deal for it, but is used wire like that still ok or no?

I have rough measurements i took, somewhere... Ill get them tomorow if i remember...

I was thinking along the lines of 4 12s honestly never even considered 15s Could be intresting. But as for loud im not really sure on what loud actually is... I do know that 200 is insane. what would 150-160 area be like... Again ive never really delt with actual db numbers, its all been by ear. So i cant say exactly what im shooting for. If i were to take a guess i would say my current set up is 100 ish, maybe more maybe less.

as for the 4 15"s that would require 8 ish ft3 or is it 12? im confusing my self here. I would want to go with a ported box. As i have always been happiest with ported boxes.

Thoughts:
Im not decided on the deck. I like the one i have, but not sure if i want to swap it out. Its an alpine cda-9856
I also have a alpine amp. 800 watts rms at 2 ohms. I belive its currently wired with 2 gauge wire too. It currently powering a 15" memphis sub that im waiting for the smell of death to come. I have a very strong feeling that it will be soon too.

That is my current set up.
Right now ive been focusing hard on subs, but i know that i need to also upgrade my : cough stock cough : speakers.
I have accepted the fact that upon completion of this project, my truck will have been well hacked up. good thing its not a collector car or anything

I like the sound of 4 15"s not something you see everyday, espically in a truck.

The MCM wire is fine, however is a pain to bend to where you want it. Being used is no big deal as long as the jacket is in tact. Make sure you use enough power wire as this will be very important later.

I guess when I said how loud, I should of been clearer with the question.

a 130-140db is attainable without much work. 140-150 requires some know how, testing, and power to get. The 250 just breaks the 150 mark. Anything over that is going to be purpose built and wont allow you to listen to music.

With the truck, there is a few ways you can go,

1 is all out bass, it will lack on the looks a bit, however you can make it look pretty good.

2 show stopper, Pretty fiberglass boxes and fancy build tend to yield lower numbers. make no doubt some can get down but compared to a regular build there a tad quieter.

4 12's or 15's and about 4-8000 true watts will get you some attention real quick. There are plenty of guys banging hard on a setup like that.

Thats the kind of bass shaking, eyeball bouncing, door and window flexing you can achieve. The box required to do that won't be your pretty fiberglass kind.

Here's what I would do.

4 DC LVL4 15's and a Rockford T4001 Amp. That would give you plenty of real tested power and sound.

If ya want big boom, your are talking REAL amps, subs and batteries. The rest is secondary.
