Colt New Service & the S&W New Century aka Triple Lock.
SteveBricks: Good luck finding a 22 conversion kit for a 1911 Colt.
The last time I saw one for sale, it was priced at 800 smackers = no gun included!
I'd look for a Colt Ace, the .22 caliber version of the 1911.
btw: My first pistola was a .45 Colt SAA made in 1896. I bought it at a local gunshow for $90.00.
That was MORE than a few years ago!

i've been looking at one myself and i have shot just about everything. i happen to like the H&K usp series and the Springfield XD series.
but the very best way to buy a gun is to go rent them and shoot them to find out witch one YOU like the best.
so far i am liking the XD compact in .40. The .45 double stack is a little too wide for my liking, and its a little cheaper than a H&K(starving college student) but these would be my concealed carry guns.
i also like the hammerless revolvers, a county sheriff buddy of mine carries one in .357 not sure who makes it but its wicked cool. small enough to be worn on the ankle with out any one knowing.

I can't believe that no one has mentioned one of the most popular guns of all time.... the good ol beretta 92fs....also known as the M9 by the us military. Currently the standard issue sidearm for the US military. Not only are 9mm rounds MUCH MUCH cheaper to shoot than a 45, but they're much easier to learn on as well.
I ABSOLUTELY love my 92fs....wouldn't trade it for anything (except maybe a kimber straight up...LOL)

Well after reading all the posts so far and opinions and participating in several of these "what the best [handgun, rifle, shotgun]" I have to admit I'm a firearm snob, just like I'm a watch snob.
Based on my experience, which includes all or most aspects involved in shooting and reloading, I have to agree with sierraben most.
There are just some brands I will not own from prior experience. Although I like Beretta and still own a Cougar, the two 92F's I owned were unsatisfactory when it came to accuracy @ 25 and even 15; that's why I gave two a try. BTW the military is phasing out the Beretta for another brand...just saw the news last week-S&W.
Here's my two cents:
only from what I have or had owned-
.44 mag Ruger
.357 Ruger GP100 or SP 101
.38spc S&W service
.45 ACP Colt 1911 (Govt., Commander, or Officer or any configuration)
be aware these are SA only...prefrence thing
9mm I sold everything but the Glocks and H&K
I have more but those are my PERSONAL favorites
As for .22...I think I have a dozen revolvers and Autos...they are all fun, but the Browning Buck Mark Varminter will shoot MOA at 100 yrds on bags...but it has a 10" bull barrel, so its not a practical carry.

For a fun plinker, I probably enjoy my Ruger MKII and Walther P22 the most just because ammo is so cheap for the 22's. My P22 is movie quiet with the Outback II suppressor and subsonc ammo...
My carry choice is either my XD45 or my Kimber Ultra Carry.
My 92F has never given me any problems, but I do know some that have had bad experiences, especially when you put a lot of rounds through them. I've never ran it as hard as others have either. But I would not put my 92F up against some of my other guns either. It is pretty accurate, but I have others that make it look sloppy. I still like it because of the ease of use, breakdown, feel, and performance with suppressors though...
I've read in different reports that the Air Force wants to replace the M9 with something else, but they were denied this year in the budget as the JCP might start having life again to search/study for a new sidearm. Only time will tell how that will play out again...
