When fixing chipped paint.....

on the fenders of my dualie, is it best to wet sand the area a little before applying the paint, or just do it.

I plan on using the little spray cans of factory match paint from Carquest.

Thanks

Yes you want to rough the area up a little so the paint will have something to adhere to.

Use a small brush to repair a chip and take your time and let it dry between coats till it's almost level with the rest of it

You can get a little tube of rock chip filler from your local napa or lordco... Fill the little chips with a plastic putty knife ...... lightly sand... and spray on your new paint...

Just did it tonight and my buddies body shop on a fender for him !!! I can get you the name of the stuff tomorrow if you like ?????

Yeah, that would be great, thanks. What grit sandpaper did you use?

Another option is to have one of the mobile services that the dealers use for used cars do it. They use an air brush and the results are great. You'd also be surprised how cheap they'll do it for too. Since business is off for most of them right now, it's worth making a call or two.

You can use a heavier grit to remove the big stuff but make sure you finish it with 320 or better... Make it smooth before spraying or you will see any kind of sanding marks right through the paint..

That's a good idea Austin. Since I'm not too good with touch up stuff like that, where would I find one of these businesses? Is there a certain place they would be listed in the yellow pages? Do you think this would work on a fairly long scratch on the tailgate?

I just fixed a big hole / crack on my pass fender. I used fiberglass behind it, then thickened resin to fill the front, then a final very light smearing of bondo (I hate using Bondo) I then primered it about an inch past the repair, then did 3 coats another 2" past the primer so it wouldn't show when I wet sanded it.

Unfortunately all I had around was white primer, so the repair isn't an exact match with only 3-4 coats, but looks pretty damn good. I actually used two tubes of the chip paint you can get at the dealer or any auto store. I thinned it about 20-30% with laquer thinner and it came out pretty shiny. I then wet sanded with 2000, 3200, 4800, and lastly 6000 grit sand paper. I got the stuff from a plexiglass window repair kit (Cobra helicopter windows are $6000 each and get scratched easy) and finally I went over it twice with Meguires rubbng compound cream.
