90' I6 trans

I've got a 1990 I6 auto 2wd. I've been trying to figure out if my trans could handle the power of the 302 crate engine I'm planning on dropping in there but my research has been all but successful. Do I have the E40D like the v8's or is it something else? Can anyone help?

Hummmm.....

Let's sea....

The Inline Straight 6 is 300 cubic inches at 4.9 liters.

The small block V8 with 302 cubic inches at 5.0 liters.

2 cubic inches of differance , and 1/10 differance in liters.

There is not going to be a differance in the output feel of power switching to the V8

The inline 6 has just as much power as the 302. It just has fewer, larger pistons then the 302. I would stick with the straight . It will leave you more room under the hood then the V8's design dose. I presently have a 302 in this truck.

As far as transmissions more then likely you have either an AOD (overdrive) or a 3 speed C6.

Both the 300 and 302 are small block motors , so your transmission in your 300, will mount to a 302 also .

There may be a differance with the flywheel as to matching to the transmission. Some have different weights balanced to them according to the different transmissions.

more pony's

The thing is i want to drop the 302 because I'm dropping a crate engine 302 EFI with 360 HP so I was hoping that I wouldnt have to spend the extra $3000 bucks and swap out transmissions too. I think I do have the AOD because my old girl has overdrive and is definatley not a 3 speed. Thanks for the help. If you have any other input then I'd appreciate the help.

Your transmission will mount to the 302, just find out what flywheel is the right one for your application.

Your TV connections will mount differently on the 302
So make sure you learn how to set the Throttle Valve correctly (with a line guage to the transmission ports, not the clip set method) Or you will burn the AOD up quick.

The TV is not a kick-down, and works much different . it has to do with appling internal line pressures to the AOD.

Read up on some of it here:

"SilveFox" is a grand wizard with those AOD's.
