Hey, my oil pressure gauge on my 4x4 Ranger began oscillating wildly at idle, then went dead. Plenty of oil, engine runs fine. Bad pressure sensor I guess ? Where would I find the sensor on a 1999 3.0 V6 ? No luck looking by the oil filter.
If it is like the 3.0L used on the Aerostar, it should be on the back of the engine, on the passenger side. You model does not have a distributor, but it is close to where the distributor would be.
Well, I figured it out. There is a small plastic pin that the needle rests on, on the face of the gauge. The needle had jumped around enough to go past the pin and was prevented from returning to mid-range by the pin. Broke the clear-plastic cluster cover in the process though..................
hi there,
I would like to know what the po 174 stands for in my F150 2002 XL? I got this code when the service engine light came on. Where is this sensor located? Can I replace it? since I know enough about cars and I am handy around them.
Thanks
The stock OP gauges are basically just idiots light with a needle, the dash reading will either be on or off, just like a light bulb. There is no way to tell the actual OP with the stock gauge. (it moves to "normal" position at around 6 psi) anything lower than that, the gauge is "off".
Interestingly enough, just yesterday, my 2002 3.0 (41,000 miles) started doing the same "Oscillating " thing. Came to a stop light after cruising at 65 mph, and the gauge started dropping, then 'snapping' back. Ran solid in the middle once I took off, same thing happened at next light. Stopped, checked oil (was fine), symptom never returned. Is my sensor going out, or is a random event like this acceptable? Drove another 150 mostly highway , no problems noted.
