OK all you Ford heads, I removed the belly button SB Chevy engine from my 53 F100 as advocated here and installed a 302. I had to buy 3 used engines before I got lucky enough to get a good crank and block that was rebuildable. I have an 1985 truck block and I believe I used the 1971 Van crankshaft. I did not have a complete set of accessory brackets, pulleys etc and the nightmare began. Can anyone suggest a good year to try to get this stuff from. I thought I had it whipped when I bought everything off the front of a 1965 289. The waterpump lower hose was on the wrong side for my new radiator and the games began. There seems to be several different harmonic balancers, and a bunch of different waterpumps, and bracket arrangements. Only thing I can find in the junkyards are 80s stuff with smog pumps. Way too ugly. I will know not to buy an incomplete rebuilder engine next time but I need to get out of this jam for now. Buying used stuff that won't work is really starting to get expensive and I need to start over again. I am missing the simplicity of a Chevy engine right now. By the way I need to run PS and hopefully AC someday. The aftermarket kits I have found are incomplete.
You do know that you should use a 1981 or older flywheel and damper with the 1971 crankshaft? It should be the older 28oz balance. I would try a late 70's car like an ltd or something with a 302 in it. Even if it did have the smog pump, you could take it off.
At this point I need to pull the balancer off and weigh it. I could easily have made a mistake with the remnants of three motors plus some yard parts. Problem with removing a smog pump is you lose your triangulation of the belts with only two pulleys. Sometimes you get by with it, sometimes not. The way my luck is going it will squeal continuously. I am not certain that late 70s crank pulley fits real early balancers. There are definitely differences in the belt placement on the balancer for different years. I will check before I lay any more money down.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 10-May-02 AT 09:38 PM (EST)]I haven't seen many car/smog pump set-ups, but my 1980 f150 has a special bracket that mounts the alt down low on the pass side of the engine, and the smog pump up over top of the alt. Believe it or not, they drove the smog pump with a very short belt running from the alt directly to the smog pump. It's pretty weird, and I would think hard on the alt bearings, but if you could find a set-up like this, it could be modified easily. Also, if you do find a complete set-up, and are sure it's earlier than 1981, then I would get the damper off of it AND the timing pointer. They put the timing marks in different places sometimes, and the scale needs to match the damper. I think when I was done, I would still check TDC to see if it was right.
Also, they very early dampers had 3 hole pulleys, and the later ones had 4 mounting holes. This changed sometime in the very early 70's.
Thanks for the advice, I will definitely get everything when I find it. I also may need to buy another new waterpump (accessory mounting bosses are different) and possibly another new fuel pump. I believe everything in front of the timing cover is a potential conflict for me at this point.
Anyone out there have a trashed 302, pre-1981 and want to sell all the brackets, pulleys, balancer and PS pump? I have scoured the salvage yards around here. Where did all those 78 T-Birds go? Nothing left but Tempos and othe FWD stuff. Sorry, I know this isn't the classifieds but its time to fire up that engine I rebuilt over a year ago. Never dreamed it would be this hard to find 70s stuff.
I think the key to part of the mystery is to make sure you have the correct timing cover and balancer combination. The timing pointer is on different sides according to which way the water pump lower outlet is. If you mix things up, you wind up with the pulleys about half a groove off ( been there, done that ). The lower water pump outlet seems to be opposite on small cars vs. big cars/trucks.
Thanks to everyone for their help. I bought the entire front of a 79 LTD 302 today. Looks like it will work nicely. The smog pump runs on a separate belt and can be discarded. The AC is separate so I can add it later if the compressor will work out. ALT and PS run off a serpentine that looks pretty clean.
