Smile 2009 Snowmobile preview today - Regina

All four brands will be in one building today previewing their best stuff for 2009. We went to the one in Edmonton last spring that had the similar format. We are going to Edmonton this weekend - they are having their four brand preview on Apr 12. Just a little road trip - what trouble could possibly arise????

what an incredibly large waste of money... i love sledding with every millimeter of my being, but the lack of snow in this local area does nothing to feed my interest...

Sleds have the most potential of all for a disappointing year when it doesnt snow - it SUCKS when you have a new sled and the ground is brown in January - been there done that! We now go to the mountains to ride when that happens and some guys go whether or not it snows here.

I just came back from that show!!! I was only looking at the real sleds though SKI-DOO!!!! lol! I saw the new ski-doo 4-stroke, 1200cc 130hp and under 500lbs dry weight. I might have to eat my words about never buying a 4-stroke sled!!

4 stroke is the only way i'd go if buying a new sled... the technology is out there to make them perform way beyond a 2 stroke, be quieter, but more expensive...

For me they were too heavy until this new 4-stroke skidoo came in at 499lbs, quite light for a 1200cc 4-stroke in a sled. The two stroke version of the same sled has a 110hp 600cc that weighs only 399lbs. Skidoo also has a new 2-stroke out that is as clean as some of the competitors 4-strokes!

I will have to have a look at that sled - all the other 4-strokes are way, way, way too nose heavy for the way I ride!

i'm not a ski-doo man, but i must admit they have really tried to preserve and improve the 2-stroke while others have forgotten it long ago... i drove a 06 rev last year, 800 summit or something. really impressive power for a stock machine, great ride, but that butcher block front end makes me puke!! looks like an anorexic cat!! quickly forgiven by the tailwalk experience, but for those months that i have to look at it in the garage when i can't ride????? yeeeeeeech

I am a long time Polaris guy but my last two sleds were 'doo - a 2000 Millenium 700 Summit(the black and chrome one!) and a 2002 800 SummitX. I cant get comfy on a REV - I see all the advantages of rider forward but its got my knees and ankles in very uncomfy positions - I have ridden about 5 or 6 of these sleds. The new XP has a better rider position but I feel they are not very good looking - even ugly!!! I am going back to Polaris - the IQ rider position is perfect for me (very similar to that of the XP). I like the room under the hood when you lift it vs the way Skidoo has everything in a manner that even a sparkplug change is a beach!
I will get an RMK but not sure which yet - I would like a 2007 Dragon RMK

I cannot believe they are making such huge sleds, so light now. Hell the last sled I owned must have weighed about double the new ones, and had no where nears the power!

A quick history perspective:

When the first generation of big sleds came out in 1993 (not counting the first time around in the 1970's when they had some big stuff) the 750 (1993) and 800 (1994 and 1995) Polaris Storms were listed at about 560 dry(they were heavier than that!) but they were about 130 hp. An XLT of similar vintage was around 480 pounds and made 90 hp. Tody an 800 xp weighs about 475 and makes 154 hp. The Skidoo is about 30 lbs lighter than the Polaris!

Actually the skidoo XP 800 X short track is 425lbs, with 151 hp just looked at the brochure today.

They are sure making the sleds a lot lighter and more advanced. Clean burning 2-strokes, remote start, electronic reverse, ect.

I have had nothing but ski-doo snowmobiles, Back when I was younger Dad would buy a new sled every year, I would get his old one(if you could call a one year old machine old)and he would trade off my old sled. This was great for me!!! Ever since we started getting less snow I have lost interest, this year I never took the sled out!

i still think the quad is the way to go... for the amount of snow we get, i can have just as much fun with it as a sled. when i can afford it, i'll have a mountain mod sled, and spend a couple of weeks a year in the mountains...

Quads are sweet for sure. You dont get the speed and the same kind of fun as with a sled though. Im in the same boat though, theres not enough snow around here in the winter, and i work most of the winter anyways.
