Hello all! Just wanted to stop in and introduce myself. My name is James and I live in cenla La. My dad bought a 1966 F100 in 1967 and has had it ever since, it was his daily driver for 30 yrs. Dad first got sick in 1998 with cancer and was disabled after his first surgery, he did bounce back somewhat enough after his first surgery and was able to drive his '66 2 miles to the store and back every now and again but that was about as far as he could go in it considering it had no power brakes and no power steering. The 302 in it was gettin pretty tired and we had plans to build a new engine for it. Then in 2004 cancer struck again and he had to have another surgery, after that he pretty much did not drive anymore. But we still had plans to get his truck back in shape even though he could not drive it anymore, I was wanting him to at least get to ride in it again after I got it back on the road. Dad passed away in January of this year before I got it going again and I promised him I would always keep the truck in our family. I am starting to tinker around with it a little now and decided to join you fellows here on this board to share my progress and ideas.
I am very sorry for your loss. Let me be the first to Welcome you to the Best Ford Truck Enthusiasts site there is. This the place to get questions answered and even a great place to sometimes find needed hard to find parts. I hope you plan to start a gallery so we all can see your truck and share in your progress, and lend moral support as well. Once again Welcome.
Welcome, I hope you find everything you need here, it is a great site. You say you have a 302 in the truck? Your dad put it in? Hope to see some pictures soon.
Thanks guys! The truck originally came with a 6 cylinder and dad swapped in a 302 yrs back. He wore out a couple engines through the years so the 302 in it now is number 3 i believe, he used his truck for everything from pulling his boat, to hauling trailer loads of firewood, to trailing his 8n ford tractor around etc. It still has the original granny 4 speed transmission in it oh by the way could someone please tell me the correct identification for this transmission?
I will try to snap some pics of it this weekend. It has been sitting in the shop for the last few years so it is pretty dirty and all. I did manage to get the old 302 fired back off about a month ago and then again this past weekend. I ran a compression test and 2 of the cylinders are too low to fire and 1 other one is pretty weak on compression. But it still ran with some missing. I just really wanted to hear it run again before I pulled it out for the new engine.
That's a good up grade to the 302. A good start, if it has been sitting that long, you will need to clean out the fuel tank before you start the next engine.
Welcome to FTE ... I would hazard a guess that the tranny could be a t18 or t19. LOL, clean it up a bit and you'll find a number on the side that will tell you. Guaranteed, one of the more knowledgeable folks will be along to help you out. Post the vin # and any numbers you can find on the tranny to help them help you.

I'm late to Welcome you and honor to hear that another Slick in among the family. I too agree the 302 is a good replacement engine; parts are in abundance and performance is good.
Hope you have a great time with your truck as I know you dad is watching you tinker with it and he's giggling....
Thanks everyone! The fuel tank will definitely need cleaning out, I may just go ahead and replace it. I have looked for a poly tank to replace the metal tank with but have not found anybody yet that makes one for a '66. To get it back running I used an outboard motor fuel tank hooked directly to the fuel pump lol. I will see what numbers I can find on the transmission.
The 302/5.0 is a great engine. I am a SBF gearhead I currently have a '91 Ranger with an EFI 5.0 engine installed backed by a T5 trans from a mustang and 8.8 rearend from an explorer. I have been thinking of going with fuel injection in the '66. Plus upgrade to power disc brakes and power steering and put the aftermarket AC unit back in it. But first I am going to focus on the engine. I have tons of stock 86-93 Mustang EFI components on hand, but I read where others say the Cown Vic EFI setup is easier to do as far as the actually routing of its harness and where it would place the computer. I also can get a '92 F150 with complete drivetrain, wiring, computer etc... for a donor if that would be a good way to go. I haven't decided yet, still go over each setup in my head trying to figure out which would be more practical. I know the later 5.0 blocks do not have the hole for mounting the clutch pivot mount that the '66 uses but if I go with the F150 5 speed I would want to keep the hydraulic clutch setup. Does anyone make a bolt in clutch master cylinder setup for the application to work or would that be a custom fabrication job? I am just trying to weigh all my options right now.
GOSH!!! fuel tanks are hard to find... ive made 2 or 3 threads asking them.. if you go find the last one... numberdummy gave me the parts number to the gas tank... just go to greensales... they had them a week ago.. there where 2 avliable i belive.. i was going to order one of them... but i ordered a tank for a 56 and didnt fit... so im down 300 dollars and to lazy to box it up and send it back.. wait.. what year did they mount the tank under the cab??? now i have to go look it up...
I believe it was 56 Billy...as for the tanks...I soooooooooo wish you woulda gone to the Pdx swap meet...I saw something that woulda made you smile...and kept a lot of dough in your pocket...I hope you have gotten the new tank though and got your beast up and running :-)
I have found under the bed poly tanks but not one for behind the seat like the '66 has. I am not sure how corroded the metal one in there now is yet since I have not taken it out but it has been sitting up since around '03 I believe.
I went this weekend and looked at two '92 F150 for possible drive train donors. One with a 5 speed trans but this truck was pretty worn out and not worth the $1500 the owner was asking for. The other one has an automatic trans and it ran pretty well. After looking at how the engine harness was routed and configured in the F150, it is integrated in with the chassis harness so this will be a pain to make work. The eec-iv efi mustang or crown vic (as far as the harness and wiring) will be a much better choice and a lot easier to setup.
