Thank you, Charlie. I did some digging last night and kept running across the same info from blueoval. That garagemahal site does help fill in some blanks. Gave me some years. I actually did track down a guy in Texas with a F5 axle. I'm hoping it'll drop in my truck. My truck has an RV frame I think. 98 E350 cutaway. It's 42 1/2 in wide. The spring centers are probably at 47". I'm waiting for the guy to get back to me. I wonder, could I swap out the differential? My code is 52. I have a DANA 70 from what I'm reading.

And you can't swap the entire Sterling axle in place of the Dana cause at the very least the spring perches ain't in the right places.
And the factory limited-slip diff in Sterling axles ain't all that great to begin with, it's a friction setup rig clutches that wear pretty fast in hard use.

If the truck is a narrow-frame factory cab-chassis then the axle will unfortunately be too narrow for you in every possible way.
IMPORTANT EDIT: your factory 98 D70 has a VSS in the diff housing, the 86 D70 you're looking at won't have that so if you swap the whole unit you'll lose your speedometer, cruise, and ABS. It might be possible to swap just the diffs and transfer the tone ring from your open carrier to the limited-slip one, but I've never worked with a Dana that old so I can't tell you for sure if this will work.

Thank you for the info. Definitely don't want to lose the ABS like AT ALL. So yeah, I'll have to take a good look at what I got in front of me when I go meet him. I wonder if the same issue is true of a body swap. I found an 05 f350 dually. The frame is cclwb so it should be about the same length. I have a flatbed so I have wiggle room with the wheel well. I imagine I'll have to do some mount relocation and even possibly do some hose fabrication to connect everything. Should I try to get the ABS module off the 05?

Wait hold on, are you thinking of dropping your Econoline cab and flatbed into the '05 F350 frame? I'd imagine that ain't gonna be easy at all - frame widths, frame rail side profiles, etc - everything will be wrong.
Here's a pretty obvious question - why don't you just get yourself a TrueTrac or Detroit SoftLocker or an Eaton E-Locker that's made for your D70 axle AND gears (cause Dana axles use different offset differentials based on the gears ratio) and install that and be done with it? Seems the easiest and most painless way out.

There is one other issue of my front end has concrete all over it and needs to be completely replaced to be aligned. Also, I feel 4x4 would be much more advantageous than only one axle locking. At least, this is what I have read and heard plus I find myself in some muddy places. Often. My current setup has to be towed out of slicks and I have to respect the weather quite a bit. I can't even pull away if I don't have the bed loaded with weight. Truck is just too long. the non slip rear end just lets me down every chance.
