I have a 2000 excursion with a 7.3 with 160,000 miles on it. I recently did the ccv mod and I have a good amount of blue smoke coming out of the vent tube when the truck is warmed up and idling. Is this normal?
The amount of smoke will vary somewhat between vehicles based on several factors, some of which are below:
- internal wear, which determines the amount of "blowby"
- weight of oil (which affects the thickness of the oil film on internals
- oil manufacturer - affects individual characteristics of oil like 'filming tendency", detergents, etc.
- any potential restriction in CCV line (like a trap, low dip in tube run collecting condensed vapors, etc.)
For example, I used an Amsoil 5w40 synthetic with a 1" straight run of vinyl tubing and a trap in the line and had no smoke. I changed to Schaeffer's 5w40 synthetic, and replaced the trap with a larger one, and now have white smoke all the time. I am told that this smoking issue will diminish as I run a couple more oil changes of Schaeffers through the engine because the Schaeffer detergent package is having a "cleansing effect) inside the engine - something that multiple users of Schaeffers have experienced as they switched to that oil.
I don't have a trap on mine do you think that would help? I run the oil that the ford dealership sells me.
I doubt a trap would help. The trap is there to settle out the oil in the vapor into a liquid again so it doesn't stain your driveway.
There are better oils out there than Motorcraft Dino. Pete's two suggestions are very good oils. I am switching to Rotella Syn from NAPA Syn (Supposedly not diesel rated)
