THANX Paul O! That was a nice link. But, I didn't see it till this morning, and yesterday I took off the head before doing that test. Hoping, that whatever the problem was, would be in there, and I would be able to see it. Sure enough! the exhaust valve has a small chunk off the side of it. So it's raining again today, and I'll probably not get much done but by new parts & maybe put the new valve in the head, while in the house. Also, do I still need to use the lapping compound on #2? Or is that only if it fails that dirty test you wrote about on tue.?

The exhaust valve has a small chunk off the side. Well, it's raining again today and I probably won't get much more done than bying new parts and maybe putting the new valve back in head (in the house). So, do I still need to by the lapping compound? Or is that only if it fails that (light oil or water) test you talked about on tue.?

SORRY! about the two (threads?) I'm still kinda new to this PC world. Something else I just thought about, Is do I need to be worried about the piece that's missing from the valve, or will that have went out the exhaust? I didn't see or hear anything in the header.

You'll want to inspect the valve seat for damage, it should be nice and smooth. If it's dirty with carbon you'll have to clean it up, if it's damaged with a nic from the part that broke off you may need it machined.
What condition was the head gasket in? You had white smoke which indicates coolant in the exhaust so you need to find the source of the leak. If it wasn't the gasket you probably have a crack in the head. This is probably how the valve got broken in the first place.. coolant spraying on the hot exhaust valve.

The valve seat looks fine, and as far as the gasket goes, it was a mess! Cracked & brittle, But it was hard for me to tell if the damage I saw was due to me removing the head. Also, I noticed that there was a good amount of oil on the back of the motor below where the head sat. And I usually kept the motor pretty clean, although the area behind the intake is pretty hard to get to or see before removed.

If you have a machine shop nearby they could magnaflux the head and tell you if it's cracked or not. It would SUCK to put this all back together only to find out you still have a problem and have to take it off again.

I think your right

Yeah Paul O, Your proably right. It's just that I'm disabled (bad back), and don't have much money coming in right now so I'm tring to keep any cost I can down. But this HAS been alot of work to have to go back and do it again. So I think I'll take your advise, and comment again when I've gottin the results.

It shouldn't cost too much to have 1 head tested, and you may save a few $$ by removing the valves yourself if they are going to charge you for that. Good luck.. hope it checks out fine.

Head check?

Well I had the magnaflux test done. (30$ not bad) But, bad news... The heads cracked between valves on #2. I hated to hear the bad news , but better now than once reinstalled (THANX for tip). So it looks like I'll be taking the head off the 90 today. Then I'll take it back to the shop (next wk.) and check it too. Although it seemed fine when it ran last (3 maybe 4 yrs ago). I've learned better safe ect. As long as it's a match & checks out OK I'll be puttiner back together soon. I'll update with my progress, When I've made some. LOL!
