I'm finally ready to start putting my truck back together. i got new spindle studs for the front axle, but cant afford the nuts from ford. they are $10+ each and i need 10, so i was thinking would grade 8 nuts with nylock inserts be OK? or should i bite the bullet and order the right ones from ford? or does anyone have any other ideas?
I bought some of the all metal type lock nuts for mine a couple years ago and they were right close to 80 cents each so for 10 you aren't going to spend $10 let alone that much a piece, someone is trying to stroke you cause as Bill just pointed out they are an obsolete part number (ford didn't bother to keep a part number on the books for something you can buy at a hardware store that easily) I not only would go to a place that has a large selection of bolts and buy them but I would then take them to that ford dealer, grab the owner drag him back to the parts dept, get a hold of the parts guy that told you that price then show them BOTH what those nuts cost and inform them that due to them trying to rip you off you won't be doing any business with them in the future cause they are scammers and I personally wouldn't ever trust them.
I looked these up, found the part number, typed it into ftepartsguy's website = obsolete.
Then I looked through the Ford OSI** catalog: Obsolete there, too.
I wonder what Ben Dover Motors is trying to sell him for 10 bucks each?
If available, the price should be no more than a buck or two each.
OP = Did the dealer give you the part number for those gold plated nuts?
I'd give a coupla fins just to see what it is.

yeah thats what they found too, obsolete, so he got out a big blue book and about a half hour later came back with a part number that was for an 82 f250, saying the studs are too short but the nuts will work. the studs were about 2 bucks each and when i asked him how much for the nuts his eyes bugged out of his head and said $10.35 each! to which i replied WHAT THE #$%^??? and he suggested using grade 8 nylock. but i figured id check on here first. the froblem is that i dont have the original ones to compare.

I wonder if that is for a quantity in a bag of them.

I'll betcha he typed the part number into his 'puter to get the price HIS dealer charges for them, right?
$10.35 each, huh. CACA del TORO!
Here's the REAL deal.

WOW! thank you Bill! yeah he did say it was his price. but what puzzles me is i usually do get a good price. i don't know why they were so far off on these?
well by good price i mean, i didnt cry when they told me how much! sometimes i buy ford parts through a mechanic i know, because he only charges me his price.

If you knew how much some dealers today mark up the prices, you'd do far more than cry!
One system in place for many yrs for parts that cost under a C note (on the westside of LA, where the money is...dunno what other dealers did elsewhere, but I can guess) was to triple the dealer net price to arrive at a new retail (aka list) price. Triple!
What was the actual dealer net price? Anywhere from 25 to 50% off the Ford suggested retail price.
So...if a part has an actual Ford suggested retail price of 40 bucks, dealer net could be 40% off that figure = 24.00 bucks.
Now triple that 24 buck figure to arrive at a dealers new retail price of $72.00!
Now you know why some dealers are called BEN DOVER MOTORS!
I'm completely innocent, of course, I never did any such thing.
btw: A typical example...one member here was quoted like $350.00 for one (1) valve cover...350 smackers!
I did a search and found the ACTUAL SUGGESTED retail price was $180.00 (bad enough), and if bought from an FTE sponsor, his price was $135.00.
