My neighbor just pulled his valve covers off to find a set of comp cams 1.6 rollers on his 67 mustang with a 289. The heads also had 351 stamped into them. Does this mean that they are 351W heads? Where is the casting number to identify which ones they are? It is a pretty good running motor. At least 275HP. It has a performer intake and a slightly hotter than stock cam. Don't know much about the nitniod details on the small blocks so I figured I would ask the experts.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 15-Jun-02 AT 07:47 PM (EST)]Rat, sounds like 351 heads to me. When I rebuilt the 351W I had, the heads had 351 stanped on them on the underneath side. Instead of rebuilding those heads I bought a set of rebuilt 289 heads with smaller chambers that had been ported and polished. These had 289 stamped (actually it's raised lettering, not stamped) in the same spots as the 351 was on my original heads. I can't remember for the life of me right now where the casting codes were on my heads but it'll be something like D90E and I think it's on the same side (underneath) as the 351 markings.
Hope this helps.

Yup. Check where the head bolts go through the heads. The little Windsors use 7/16" bolts. 351's use 1/2" bolts. You'll find either some sort of adapter washer or a gap.

You'd have to pull the intake manifold and use a mirror to see the casting numbers. If these are the C9AE or D0AE heads, you've got some good flowing heads. But for a 289 to keep its compression up, you'd want to use heads like the C6OE 289 heads with 54cc combustion chambers.
BTW, my C6OE heads have the numbers 289 cast into them, as well as the numbers 66 on the other end of the head. Does your friend's heads have a two digit number cast into them?
