on my 74 f-100 4x4 I wanted to know what transfer case I have. So I crawled under my truck today found the blue tag and it reads 203. My truck has the locking hubs?? I was under the assumption that if I had locking hubs that it was a part time 4x4, I thought that the full time 4x4s didn't have locking hubs?? Is this right?
You are correct, but your truck might have a part-time conversion, thus the locking hubs.
Will your front driveshaft spin free when the hubs are unlocked (free)
if yes, you undoubtedly have a 203 with a part-time conversion.
I have to put my power steering swap together(waiting on the weather) I got this truck when the previous owner was doing a steering swap and he said he burned up the tranny towing. So I need to get the steering together and then see what the deal is with the tranny. So I should be able to crawl under the truck and spin the front driveshaft by hand with the hubs unlocked???? Then when I lock them I shouldn't be able to turn the shaft?
done right?
It is either going to work, or not work. This is a go, no-go deal.
You are very correct, that if you lock the front hubs, you wil not be able to turn the front shaft, but this is only because the front hubs are locked.
You could shift the transfer case with the hubs onlocked, and try to turn the front shaft. It should not turn, and this would indicate that the case is operational.
Al you are really looking for is 2wd. That would be output to the rear shaft only
The 203 case is a fulltime (unless converted) and the front shaft always turns, and wil never spin freely, unless a part-time conversion has been made.
with the 203 with a conversion the shift pattern will be like this
lo loc=4lo
lo =2lo
n =n
hi =2hi
hi loc=4hi
so with a 203 you have a 2 wheel lo where the 205 doesnt. but the 203 is a chain drive and when converted to part time the chain doesnt run in 2 wheel.the chain lubes the rear drive assembly. need to run either 4 wheel hubs unlocked or just the hubs locked for about 20 mi for each 200 driven in 2 wheel
