Welcome! Look at the top of ths page. There is a grey band just below the top ad, click on articles/specs and find the article on rear end swaps for your year truck. All the info you could need is there.
You are likely to catch some flack for your engine brand choice, but don't let it scare you off, just keep questions on that part of your build to a minimum and have a thick skin (PM me if you have specific questions, I am using the same block).

1966/77 Bronco 9" rear end will be too short.

1978/87 Bronco 9" will be too long.

1957/72 F100 9" is what you want.

What are your plans for the front? Whatever bolt pattern you use for the rear should ideally match the front...

The 9" is an outstanding rear end. I have the larger variant 9 3/8 in my 51 and it's out of a mid 60s vintage big Ford car or Lincoln. I think the later 60s/early 70s "Camper Special" trucks also carried these.

Since there are so many gear combinations, and ID methods, I'll send you a couple links that might be vey helpful.

The last one is a speed vs. rpm calculator for given gearing ratios!

Have fun!

MII will give you some options. Depending on what brake kit and rotors you use with it you could get 5x4.5 or 5x4.75 so you could use a Ford (Explorer), Chrysler, or GM rear. Seems like I may have seen a kit to use 5x5.5 with MII but don't quote me on that...not really sure. If so, a Ford truck nine inch would work too.

Ok third try at sending this message. I hope the other two don't pop up from the computer black hole later.

Your choice on the Ford 9" is great. It's a super rear end. But there are tons of variants and options. I actually have a 9 3/8 inch rear variant that came out of a mid 60 big Ford or Lincoln. These rear ends were also used in the late 60s, early 70s "Camper Specials"

I'm going to try again to send you three links andhopefully this time they will come through - site is under construction you know.

Also, I wanted to point out a cautionary note on your Musting II front end. An outstanding choice and I am just starting to install mine. But, be careful who you buy it from. TCI is a great source. Unfortunately, I didn't go with them, I bought mine from GEARHEAD and they were absolutely horrible. I paid $2K for all the Deluxe upgrades and a sway bar. They tried to send me the standard parts not deluxe, parts were broke, I didn't get half of them, and got a tremendous amount of psycho retorical lip from their warehouse dispersal manager after I complained. It was really really bad. I'd definately stay away from them. They are GEARHEAD or "Gonefishing69" on e-bay.

I'm going to send this and if it gets posted, I'll send the links to you in a follow up.

YEEEEEEAAAAHHH that got through. Now I'll try the links - there two of them.

The first is a technical write up and description of the Ford 9" and it's variants. It's very well done and discusses some of the problems with some vaiants and things to try and avoid.

The second is a gearing calculator that will give you MPH at certain RPM for your transmission gearing with a certain rear end gearing. Very helpful. It's always a little embaressing when you take your girl on that maiden drive after depriving her of attention for a year and spending all youmoney on your truck and you're screaming down the highway at 3500rpm and only going 40!

1968/72 F100 Camper Specials have the 9 3/8" rear end. It's classified as a 9" but, besides the R&P, most of the internal parts are different than a 9" uses.

This rear end has 31 splined axle shafts, the first 9 that had them.

The rear end was an option on other 1968/72 F100's (except with 302 engines).

The 1966/72 cars: Galaxies/LTD's/T-Birds//Mercury Marquis//Lincoln Town Cars/Mark III's, and some of the HiPo's used the 9 3/8" from 1966 thru 1972.

BUT....not all of these cars came standard with 9 3/8" rear ends, it depends on the engine size, and the year.

1966/72 428/429/460's all have it.

On the 390's, it was available as an option thru 1972.

And...some 1967/72 Galaxie/LTD's have the WER 7.5 integral rear end, you do not want one of these.

AFAIK, the car rear end housings won't be wide enough, and the cars have the wrong bolt patterned axles = 5 X 4.50" or 5 X 5" ~ ~ Trucks are 5 X 5.50"

> > > 1966/72 9 3/8" rear axle tag code prefixes: WDT / WEF / WGA < < <

Wow Number Dummy, that's a print out worthy response. Thanks for all the info.

One thing though, Bill, is somewhere in all this, Mario said he was putting in a Mustang II front end. With the 9" (and for that matter 9 3/8) carrying the 5x4.5 bolt pattern, that is what his Mustang II front should come with unless he (for some unknown reason) orders it with Chevy rotors. He's going to have to buy all new wheels of course.... Yes/no?

OK Bill here ya go, I'll throw ya a fish. Here's my tag and it fits/works perfect in the 51 F1 and has 4.5x5 bolt to match my Mustang !! Front...My info says 66 Galaxie/2.80 (actually 2.79)....Feed me......

[/IMG]

Thanks Bill - I know, I'm an idiot!

WDT-F1 = 1966/70 Ford LTD/Galaxie / 9 3/8" / 2.80-1 / 31 splined axle shafts / Conventional 2 pinion non limited slip / 5 X 4.50" bolt pattern.

Is your Mustang II front end genuine Ford, or some aftermarket kit? If genuine Ford, the parts catalog sez > >

1974/78 Mustang II bolt pattern: 4 lug - 4.25" aka 4 1/4" / wheels can be either 13" or 14"

How can you use 15" 5 lug 4.50" wheels from a Galaxie with 13 or 14" 4 lug 4.25" bolt pattern from a Mustang II? Inquiring minds wanna know.

Ok Hang on a sec - lets read the question: If train A from the B&O leaves Cleveland Ohio heading west at 42.5 MPH and a second Santa Fe Train leaves Deluth Minnisota heading south at.....!!!!! Wow!

Ok, I think this is the answer to the question.

The back runs 15" with a 5x4.5 and the Mustang II front end IS an after market Kit that also runs 5x4.5s as well. I guess I should have been more specific. I also made an assumption that may have been wrong. I assumed that if Mario was going to beef up his front end and put in the Mustang II front with discs and re engine, he would also be intelligent enough not to incorporate a wheel that only carries four lugs unless all he's doing is parades. I bought the after market kit specifically for the stronger brake components it offered and the matching bolt pattern. I'm not running the Galexy wheels, I bought 15" Chrome Smoothies" with the 5x4.5 pattern 7" in front 8" in the back Different heighths of tires front and back to fill the wheel wells.

Thanks for the confirmation on the confirmation on the Diff tag too. That's what I had.
