Ok first of all what i have is an 85 F-150 with a 300 inline 6. Now the problem is when ever I hit a bumb or dip in the road the truck seems to loose power and the motor reves higher and I have to put the gas peddle to the floor just to keep up to speed at 30 if i'm going 55 with the peddle to the metal it drops down to 45-50. And when it comes out it it feels like I'm back driving my 302. I know my fuel pump is cracked but I don't know if that can couse that. If anyone has any ideas about what the problem may be please let me know.
HA! Thats the first time i've heard another person describe that. Bout 10 yrs ago i owned a 84 with the 4.9 and occasionally it would do those weird things, revving up and not moving any faster, feeling like it was dieing or the tranny was slipping, then it would be normal as hell with all the power back and run GREAT! Mine did that during a wet, humid snow day. I am still haunted by that for never being able to pin it down. Never found a problem part and when i sold it the truck ran perfect. I could only think it was a loose carb (mine had the dreaded 1bbl that constantly needed tightening) but why would the truck turn around and run great within a minute or two of freaking out? I hope someone can lay this to rest! - Good luck Fordman357!
Well at least i know I'm not crazy about this but mine dose it on almost the opposite kind of wheather the warmmer it has gotten it dose it more often. And we have tested every thing on it and all that we could find is the timming is off and the fuel pump is cracked.
I know my fuel pump is cracked but I don't know if that can couse that. w.
If you know that your fuel pump is cracked, then why don't you just change it and see if your problem goes away?
It blows my mind that people ask these kind of questions when they can CLEARLY see that something is broken and may be causing the problem in the first place.
Why not just start with the obvious stuff first, and then come and ask for help?
The reason i have not rplaced it is it has been snowing, raining and and about 30 degrees for a week and I don't want to stant out in this and do it. The reason I'm asking for help is my uncle who has worked on vehicles for 30 years says hes never seen any like this so I came somewhere where peaple know what there talking about.
ri_truck_guy, i'm the other guy that had this problem 10yrs or so ago. I had an automatic but the modulater was fine, filter fine, fluid up etc. It's the weirdest thing i've ever experianced with any vehicle. I know what fordman357 is going thru and it is mindboggling! How can an engine rev up, slow down, loose power randomly then be absolutely normal 99 percent of the time? Go figure!
oh, and uncle.stosh, people are looking for a NICE (notice the bold text) non demeening place to seek advice to a problem another might have an answer to. YOU are not required to give all the answers. Sorry guy, but it "blows MY mind" when someone has no answer but has to say something just to be heard. We need good relationships here so we're not afraid to ask questions. NOBODY knows it all. Tone it down a bit and balance the eye level a bit, please.
Heat seems to be a variable. That could indicate several potential problems...electrical, expansion of components, or leakage could cause this type of problem in different ways.
I had an 86 with the inline 6 didn't run too bad except wet weather. It liked to eat starters also. I let my son drive it when he was 16. He finished it off and sent it to the big junkyard in the sky. It seems that your problem is fuel related. Check your intake, make sure it is tight. Then check your carb, tight to the intake and the carb is not loose. Grab hold of the top and try to twist it. I have seen those carbs loosen from the top part to the bottom part. I think when you hit a bump you have something loose and it leans out the engine. Does it also backfire thru the carb? That is a clue. Just for fun check the fuel lines also. Or buy a newer one and let my son drive it!

True but people should learn something along the way. You can't just come here (or anywhere) and expect answers when something blatant is staring you in the face.
Try, just try and fix something yourself first and then ask for help. You'll never learn anything if someone always has the answers for you.
It seems like everyone these days just wants to take the easy way out. I don't know of anyone that could look at a broken fuel pump and not replace it immediately. Even if it doesn't fix the initial problem, at least you wouldn't have to worry about burning your truck to the ground.
Start from square one and take things one step at a time until you eliminate the problem. That's how you learn.
uncle.stosh stop thinking I havent tryed all I can think of this site was my second to last resoures. 19704x4F250 when you said backfireing through the carb it sparked something in my head if backfireing though the carb is when you shut off the engine it sounds like it is still fireing just much slower then it dose but will check to see if the carb or intake is loose. Thanks for the ideas I will repot back tomarrow if any of them worked
