Greetings -First post.
I have an 87 4X4 that I'm trying to re-pack the wheel bearings. I am following the procedures in my haynes manual and I come to this step: On models so equipped, using snap ring pliers, remove the snap ring from the end of the axleshaft. My problem is I don't have the snapring and I can only slide the body assembly about 1/4 inch before is stops. I tried using a couple of the cap screws for leverage but that doesn't work either. Do I need to use a puller to get it out?
There is a flat retaining ring in the manual hubs. Its just inside the hub/rotor housing and it keeps the locking hub from sliding out. Based on your description the ring is in there, that is why it's only moving out slightly. You will need a small pick or flat bladed screwdriver to get between it and the housing to work it out. Make sure you wear safety glasses.
Its an outer ring..big one. Prys out fairly easy with a small screwdriver or pick. Easier if you use two, one to work it out, one to hold it out while you work around..just be careful with it, they can pop out and get you..
I already have that one out. I did realize this mornign that they are WARN hubs. Not sure if they are OEM or aftermarket. Trying to research removal procedures online now.
