My father in law has a 97 F150 with the 4.2ltr. It has a brand new Crate motor from the ford dealership bout 5,000 miles on it since installed. While he was driving it it started to missfire and seemed to loose one cylinder at a time till it just quit. After towing the truck in he has had a computer scan done showed nothing wrong in the codes. He replaced the fuel pump cause of low pressure. fuel filter also. The truck fires just fine, But still wont start. It seems to be a fuel delivery problem. He has had several people tell him that that year model ford truck has had alot of problems with the pressure regulator, anyone else heard that? Is it possible that the regulator is re-routing the pressure back into the return line and not letting the fuel pressure to the injectors? Any Suggestions on where else to look? We need advice on this one. Anyone else have a problem like this?
Yes there is gas in the vac line. Could the regulator cause it not to start though? it doesnt run but for a few second, when you can get it to start at all.
Is there anything else that you might think could cause the no start other than this? It has to be a mechanical issue becuse there were no codes showing in the computer when it was checked.
the fuel reg works on a diaphragm when this cracks or breaks it makes the fuel pressure way to high. also when it breaks it allows gas in to the vac line. it looks like the best place to start to me. let me know how it gos.
Well the pressure regulator was just another problem, not the one responsable for it not running. I went to help him with it today and i had found that his harmonic balancer had broken on the crankshaft, the outer part has twisted throwing off the hall effect switch. Damnedest thing i have ever seen it broke all the way around rite before the keyway, insedently the bolt holding the harmonc balancer had broke too. so in effect the motor was firing out of time. Now we have got to figure out how to get the broken sleave of the balancer off the crankshaft. think that im going to pull the front seal and try to crack that piece of the sleave with a air chisel and pull it out of there. there doesnt apear to be any damage to the crank itself so im sure that once we clean up the mess it will be a pretty simple fix. Much thanks for all the help. I dont think anyone could have predicted a problem like this one. I have personaly never seen anything like it. Wish I had pictures it was wierd!!!!!!!!!!
Not sure if this applies to the 4.2, but on a 4.6 V-8 if it fires and won't idle (no codes) it''s usually the idle air control (IAC). If you step on the gas slightly when you start it and can get it to run that way, the IAC is bad.
