5 w 40 or 15 w 40

If it were me, I would take the 15W-40 back and get the 5W-40. If you already put in the 15W-40, just run it until next change.

I switched to a 5W-40 year-round about four years ago. No worries. I've monitored engine wear with use oil analysis, and I've not encountered any issues. The summer temps around here get up to over 100 degrees, and I have no concerns over my oil being too thin.
