hi guys,
i'm trying to get my 65 f100 SWB ready for the paint shop this coming weekend. bought the truck about 3 months ago with the intentions of making a real pretty daily driver. i asked the owner if it had trac-lok and of course the answer was"yes". well today i put it up on stands to get the engine and trans ready for removal and in the process spun one of the rear wheels and lo and behold both rotated in same direction, HAPPY DAYS, or so i thought. rolled under the beast to remove the drive pole and what is this staring at me? it is not a 9 inch rear, it has a rear cover plate but everything appears to be stock. can anyone tell me what this could be? the u joints nor drive shaft appear to be altered in any way. this truck has turned into a big puzzle for me. i am in the process of doing power dics front also. this is well under way just waiting to pull engine so as to have more room to work the steel lines.
thanks for all the help to date

is that a "good thing"? or do i need to put a 9 incher in the place of this. i have access to a 70 SWB that is being parted out.
thanks for the reply.

a dana 44 isnt nessicearlly a bad thing, its got a lower gear ratio... from what i understand. dont take my word on it, its just the info ive read from other fourm sites.
[btw banjo, wasnt the 44 a smaller width??? and used only on the CJ and TJ and other small jeeps? and maybe some smaller trucks?]
If you like the Dana 44 it is a good thing. It isn't a bad axle at all. I personally prefer the 9" for the ease of maintenance.
The 5-lug Dana 44 was used in the rear for some F-100s.
If I were you, I would grab the entire '72 rear end, if it is a Ford 9", and keep it back. It will perfectly bolt up to your '65 with no modifications.
Bill; just for curiosity, what's the axle code on your warranty plate? My buddy has a 77 model with a dana 44 from factory with a code of 46J. I realize a 65 or so is probably a different #, but so many folks doubted that my buddy (Dajudge51) FTE name; 77 ranger XLT would have a dana.
it's about 9:30dark time in south central VA. i will look in the morning and answer ?'s about the tag. i will also look at the rear and see if it has any markings. thanks for all the help on the "beast", just for info it is currently a real light blue with blue and white dash, soon to be red and black two tone. similar to the truck i had as a 65 high school grad. my present to me from me, with my wife's permission of course
