I wsa going to increase my tire size from 145/R75/16 (stock)
to 265/R75/16 and was told that all I needed to do, to correct the speedometer was to change the VSS gear. My local Ford store is of no help.. They say they have no gear listing for a 265 16 tire. Can anyone give me specific information about this. Part#s, pnone #s, or web sites??
Find a dealer that has some older parts guys. There's a speedo gear book out there that list these gears. All they have to do is match up the tire size with the engine, tranny, rear end ratio, etc... It doesn't matter what year it is, It could be out of a F-150, a F-250, van, etc... They've been using the same gears since the late 50's. Too bad I'm not doing Ford parts, I'd fix you up no problem. That was one of my specialties.
Had to do this on mine. The VSS gear housing is on the tail shaft of the tranny...kind of on top and on the driver's side. There is one nut that holds it on. Take the nut off and pull out the gear. Count the number of teeth on the gear and make sure you take note of the way the teeth twist with the "nipple" up. Go to http://www.finer.com/internet/pages/speedo.htm and enter in your rear end gear ratio and the over all tire height you want to go to. Then go to your local dealership and buy the correct gear for about 8 bucks. Slap it in and go. It probably took me longer to type this than it does to change out the gear.
