I've got a 351W block I am about to get machined. I am just going to take the block in when I get the work done. I'm going to keep the stock bore and crank. I have not picked a cam yet. Should I get the cam bearings replaced now with the machine work? Anything else besides cleaning, boring, and honing? I'm also looking to get some Keith Black pistons. Any good sites to purchase from? This is my first rebuild.
Depending on what you want (how much you want to spend / quality of the rebuild), you may also consider having the main bores align honed and have the lower end balanced. (I would recommend having the cam bearings replaced). Summit Racing, JEG's, and Performance Automotive Warehouse (PAW) come to mind as good parts sources.
Now is the time to spend the money and do it right, if you have a stout bottom end, then even if it's not as powerful as you want it, it will last a long time. I agree with Restorit, have it all professionally balanced, and let them do the cam bearings, that's a little more than you'd want to do in your garage (it requires a specialty tool). Whatever you do, use quality rod bolts, and use super high-quality piston rings. It's better to spend money on a bottom end, because doing head and cam work is easy compared to doing another rebuild. I did this backwards, and trusted a cheap short block with my ultra-tuff heads and cam, and now I'm burning up piston rings, and I'm hearing rods ready to start knocking. That's a sick feeling, a lot worse than getting blown away at a red light. TK
