01' 4.0 4wd rev problems

i have a 2001 ranger edge 4wd with a 4.0 automatic. i know there is a revlimiter of 3000 when in park or neutral, but for some reason i am getting the same limit even when in drive. i have also been having problems with the gas mileage, somewhere in the range of 8-12 when driving with a light foot. i have gotten a few error codes once and a while but not all the time. usually "egr gases excessive flow" but it only comes on once in a blue moon. would these be related? another problem that i have wondered about with it, the 4x4 computer is out on it, tested it all and narrowed it down to the control box under the passenger kick panel for that, could that cause some of the problems? or could it be vacuum lines, we have had problems with those too.

sorry for the long post just getting a little frustrated with the truck and my lack of money for parts. thanks in advance for the help.

Red face

Welcome to FTE epion04,

Your sympoms sound like mine & for the past 10 days I have struggled w/ my 90 Rangers situations.

Now after changing out several parts I now have been trying to diagnose, even w/ tech directions & w/o CEL or codes, her high / low, irratic ideling, while I perform my EEC-IV 3-part testing, it does as I have described above instead of giving me part 2's codes.

What this all means is that this morning I am purchasing a PCM & again hoping for the best...so you see your not alone.

We'll need some more good clues, to help you begin your troubleshoot, so begin by having the computer scanned for trouble codes & post ALL the codes found & the test sequence they turned up in. Most autoparts stores will scan at no cost if the CEL is lit, or if your having problems.

If their scantool will monitor PID's, have them monitor the fuel pressure, MAF & O2 sensors switching speed & range & post those values too.

Have you made ANY modes to the vehicle, if so what????

Where are you on due past & present scheduled maintenance items, like air & fuel filters, ect.

If you will do these things, we should be able to to form up a pretty good idea of where best for you to begin your troubleshoot.

well at least i know not to mess with that for now, i have thought about trying that myself a few times, money being the reason i hadnt.

the cel is not on at this point. it came on a couple of time a month or two ago. code p0402 if i remember right. the egr excessive flow error. cleared it out and it hasnt come on since. i had wondered about it being the egr is vacuum based and there have been vacuum problems on this truck before.

as far as maintence goes. general maintence is all it gets. tire alignment, oil changes, sparkplugs and wires, air filter, ect ( last tranny flush was around 4k miles ago). all within 2 months ago. i will get to the O2 and the fuel filter as soon as pay day comes.

being this is not my truck ( my grandfathers, i have a 91 3.0 5spd) i have had no mods done ( and being he doesnt even know how to change the oil i highly doubt he has modded anything.

hope that info is what you were needing crazypaw.

Cool PO'd beyond belief

Hi epion04,

Thank you for your considerate reply! If it wer not for my wife working & me unemployed I'd be walking by now cause I can't seem to get away from doing this I have never in my live had something that I wasn't able to resolve & now it's a matter of PRIDE along w/ cost...this rust-bucket truck is just not worth all of this aggravation but it's the only transportation that I presently have & may just have to cut my losses soonist!
