slow to start

Every time I go to start my 84 f150 4.9 when it's cold it feels like i have a dead battery. i can hear the starter turn but it is really slow like i have no juice. eventually it will turn over then instantly after that if I try to turn it over again it fires right up! i haven't had a chance to load test the battery or check the acidity of it yet but I have filled the water back up. I also have my choke wired open at the moment because the carb is having some isues but that wouldn't cause my problem would it? my question is where should I start looking? oh and I have good connection at least at my battery terminals.

My guess, (and that's pretty much what it is , although I have some experience in this area), is that your starter is going out. For some reason, they seem to work a little better after the first crank or 2, but that's just been my experience.

I'd also take a look at your cables. They can corrode internally and you will never see it unless you cut open the cover. I just peel open a small section and if it's good, tape it back up.
