I had mine changed using Mobile 1 Synthetic. Mobile 1 is supposed to contain the friction modifier. My rear chattered big time. Further research found Mobile 1 stating that some diffs would require friction modifier . So I added 1 bottle so far. It calmed everything down. My truck has been in the shop the last 2 weeks so I have not been able to evaluate the chatter or how well the rear locks up in limited slip since adding 1 bottle. If all seems well, I'll leave it alone. If not, I'll add the 2nd bottle.
Ditto, just changed from valvoline to RP and didn't add anything to the RP - my LSD shudder went away, drives great now on tight corners...
Ditto right back. Mine was shuddering and that is why I put the Royal Purple in last year before Smokin". No additives. The shudder went away and has remained gone to date.
JMOP if i was going to take the rear end apart pull axles i would replace with a Detriot locker or a gear drive tru trac,ARB, Eaton elec which is a limitied slip until you lock it.
Well I just bought some Friction modifier. I'll put is in this weekend and let y'all know how it goes. Thands for the help...
This will make the clutches slip more, not less...
Drain the fluid and don't put in any modifier in at first, this will actually be more of a locker. This is why it it recommended that you add the modifier a little at a time. (You need the modifier on a working assembly to last, but if you need to rebuild it, you can add no modifier and it may work a while longer)
My rear needs to be rebuilt, but I changed the fluid and didnt add any modifier, it works good now, but I'm sure not for long...
I am only adding more because the the rear is chattering. I don't know if the limited slip is working or not as I don't have enough power to spin the wheels from a stop.
If it's chattering yes add the mod. Go get in the grass or gravel it will spin then. Sometime it takes a lot of wheel spin to get a limited slip to spin both tires. Why won't your truck spin the tires on pavement? If your's is giving you trouble, get something that really work's. There's some good lockers out there, were you can have limited and full lock at the flip of a switch.
I just added the 2nd bottle so we'll see if the chatter is completely gone.
My truck is stock save for the 4" inch exhaust, the gauges and the 6637 that were just added. I did all of this in preparation for a DP Tuner but now I am concerned about what the tuner will do to a stock trans.

Neil
Your trans should be fine... I would get a new torque converter whenever you get the money. I bought a Precision industries TC and it works great! I also bout the BD Accumulator body. Both of these will definitely make your transmission las a hell of a lot longer and give you better performance.
Bought the TC for $1100 and the Accumulator body for $200. You can install all of this yourself not that hard, just don't over-torque the stud bolts like I did!
When I had mine in for service the Dealer told me that all the '02 diesels were limited slip. He also fixed only 3 of the 6 things I took it in for so his credibility is lacking. So 1. Do I have a limited slip and 2. How would I know it wasn't working (without taking it out on the grass)? Any thoughts on that?
Added the 2nd bottle and spun wheels in grass. Limited slip seems to be working. I'll have drive it for an hour or so to make sure all of the chatter is gone.
I've got a 3.73 limited slip rear end (from the factory it was very limited)
I also have the 3.73 limited slip rear axle was it a rare and limited axle option to have my truck is a 4x4 offroad I thought that axle along with other things was standard for that package?
