I'm trying to change the TPS on my 1986 with EFI 302. It's mounted on the bottom of the throttle body, and between that, the old phillips head screws holding it, and the air pump right there, it's not coming off very readily. any ideas without pulling the tb?
I changed mine with the throttle body off the truck. I then put the throttle body back on with the TPS retaining screws not fully tightened, and used an offset screwdriver to adjust it.
ok taking the throttle body off looks quick and easy. am I going to need a gasket or can I get by with the old one? also after the new tps is on how do you adjust it so it is correct?
You will need a gasket kit....I don't remember exactly how much it was, but it was cheap and readily available at the parts store. It came with the throttle body, IAC, EGR, and TPS gaskets. To properly adjust the TPS you'll need a voltmeter. I don't have the exact figures in front of me, but I believe the lower limit (throttle closed) was something like .5 volts, and the upper limit (throttle wide open) was 5 volts. It's measured at the wire that doesn't have constant power. When I get home I can look up the exact volatge figures and wire color for the measurement.
Doh...I didn't mention the actual adjustment in my last post. There's a certain amount of room to turn the TPS on it's set screws. You turn it either left or right to attain the correct voltage readings, then tighten it in that position.
