Thinking of removing the CAT - any future problems?
#37
All I know is there is a HUGE smell difference between my 74' F-100 with no cats and my 04' SD with a CAT. There was a difference in exhaust smell going from my stock cat to my Dynatech performance cat. When I had my header leak on my 04' you should have got a whiff of that, you could definatly smell the leak.

I could smell the exhaust leak before i got it fixed on my truck when looking in the engine bay, Im not saying that you guys are full of it, I'm just saying i ant tell a difference. that's all but comparing a carburated motor with on cats to a 04 SD fuel injected motor is kind of apples and oranges. Lol

I'm just trying to figure out why people on here are saying that it "shouldn't" or it "doesn't" change the smell. My guess would be that some of the people making these statements have never actually done it to their own vehicle. Regardless, if someone that's actually removed their cat and has noticed a difference in smell then who are we to say otherwise. I for one have done it and the difference in smell was huge. Every setup is different!

I've done it - I've smelled the difference.
I also ran my V10 for a few minutes with open headers. A few hours later, I put the Y-pipe on, but left it off the cat, and got the engine hot enough to get off fast idle.
It stank both times
Now, I know, cold start, rich mix, more HC's. But it still stank when it was warm enough for the PCM to back off the IAC and idle for 5 minutes. So it wasn't so rich anymore.
But on other vehicles I've owned, for one reason or another, I removed the cat - and what a difference.

when my truck sits at ideal when cold the afr is 13 and when warm its at 14,7 to 15
those are my observations with my wide band o2, when i toke off my Y Pipe i was under the truck ( sitting in a pit) and had one of my buddies start it and the only thing i noticed was that i could hear for 20 min, lol i wasn't really looking for a difference in smell only sound.
I have cut the cats off
1) My 97 F150
2) 87 dodge
3) 88 F350 7.3L
And the only one that i saw a difference in with sell and color was my 97 with the o2s after the cat, But i will admit that i never cut the cat off my truck , I bought it from a Repo lot and the guy that it got repoed from beat my to it. ( i had a tune up done after i bought it and when they pulled the plugs they were covered in mud, makes you wounder what they did to it to get mud past the coil packs and
cake the plug) But with my dads F350 02 v10 i cannot smell a difference.
I guess i dont see what the big deal is if i cant smell a difference?

1. Ford pre-programs a rich condition into the computer to help the converter retain its efficiency, so after I removed it I noticed a very minute amount of black smoke from the tail pipe. Corrected it with leaning the system out a little resulting in some power gain.
2. LOUD LOUD LOUD! The converter has honey-comb catalyst in it (I'm sure you know already), It does have great muffling capability but it also created backpressure. I have a flowmaster 3" Cat-back and it's a bit loud but doesn't sound bad by any means. Similar to a viper at WOT.
3. Was able to advance the ignition timing 3 deg more than what I had it before. Any pinging you might have will most likely be gone since the engine can breathe better.
4. I noticed a good amount of a fuel mileage increase (2-3) MPG.
5. Really easy to do, cut the pipe as close to the joint at which the cat is welded, separate the non-welded joint at the rear of the converter and replace with 2 18"x3" sections of pipe from autozone.
6. You have to read through your states DMV regulations for inspection. I noticed someone stated PA inspections as I am living in PA currently, PA doesn't require emission inspection in vehicles over 9000 lbs. My truck weighs in at 10,600 so I was exempt. The inspection criteria for the required "safety inspection" includes the "Exhaust inspection for leaks" step. Inspectors are not required to inspect for emissions equipment and cannot require you to repair the vehicle for a removed catalytic converter as this inspection is for general safety and not emissions/safety as most highway vehicles are.
7.YES it does make a power gain, significant one too. a plugged cat is definately a restriction but even the cat itself is a restriction. Throttle response is affected along with mid-range torque and a mpg gain also.

10600 HOLY @#&*, mine weighs 7100 with a box full of tools its a SC SB(weighed it at a local conceart company, same scales they use for the cement trucks) did you get it weighed with a load of bricks in the bed? and i wouldn't compare the sound of my truck to a viper I would compare it to a pissed off hornet, or a really big Indy car.
